This study considers the narrative method of Oksuki(玉樹記) with focus on the relationship. Oksuki(玉樹記) is a work focusing on the relationship between men and women, and has a repetitive narrative structure. Describing the relationship of the main characters, and after completing all the associations of one person, describe the other person's relationship. These are connected with weak loops, and the whole of the narrative structure is composed of 'repetition of the relationship' by repeatedly using the motif used in the previous motif. In particular, common features are found in the relationship of major characters, and there is a motif that acts as a mediator between men and women. It is poetry, deceit, war story, debating dialogue and dreams. The motives used for the relationships of Ga-eugene are scattered in the relationships of Ga-eugyum, Wang-sin, and Ga-euham. In other words, the same devices which played an auxiliary role in Ga-eugene's relationships are transformed to describe other relationships in various forms. As these motives are used repeatedly, Oksuki(玉樹記) appears to be a repetition of the relationship story as a whole. Sim-neungsuk(沈能淑) has been used in the novels of previous generations and contemporary generations to increase the interest of the work and to show various aspects of the relationship. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze Oksuki(玉樹記) from the point of view of affection novel, ‘Scholar and Beauty (Jeja-Gain)’ novels. And I think it is necessary to consider the popular aspect as well.

본고는 19세기 한문장편소설의 하나인 『옥수기』의 서술 방식에 대해 결연담을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 『옥수기』는 남녀간의 결연을 중심으로 하는 작품으로, 반복적인 서사구조를 취하고 있다. 주요 등장인물들의 결연을 서술하면서 한 인물의 모든 결연을 완료한 이후 다른 인물의 결연을 서술하고, 이들을 약한 고리로 연결함과 동시에, 앞의 결연에서 사용한 화소들을 반복 사용함으로써 전체적인 서사구조를 ‘결연의 반복’으로 구성한 것이다. 특히 주요인물들의 결연에 있어서 공통적인 특징이 발견되는데, 남녀의 결연을 이어주는 매개체 역할을 하는 화소가 존재한다는 점이다. 시, 속임, 군담, 의론체 대화, 꿈 등이 그것으로, 가유진의 결연에 사용되었던 화소들이 가유겸, 왕신, 가유함의 결연에 산재되어 있다. 즉 가유진의 결연에 보조적 역할을 했던 동일한 장치들을 변용하여 여타의 결연을 다양한 모습으로 묘사하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 화소들이 반복 사용됨으로써 『옥수기』가 전체적으로 결연담의 반복으로 보이는 것이다. 심능숙은 전대와 당대의 소설에서 활용되었던 화소들을 작품 속에서 변용함으로써 작품의 흥미를 증가시키고 다양한 결연양상을 보여주고 있다. 따라서 『옥수기』를 기존의 시각과 달리하여 애정소설, 재자가인소설의 관점에서 바라볼 필요가 있으며, 통속적인 측면 역시 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 생각한다.
