This article is written to compare Pil-gi style that has occupied the largest part of classical literature history with Jeon-gi style. Especially, it was the consciousness of the problem that I tried not to return the difference of Pil-gi and Jeon-gi to the superiority of the ability to shape but in parallel with the difference of the writing strategy or the writing attitude. To this end, in Sections 1 and 2, Pil-gi was used as a broad concept by embracing miscellaneous prose of pre-modern literature, and as a result, the concept of novel and the meaning domain became similar. In Section 3, we argued that Pil-gi and Jeon-gi were products of different writing strategies. Jeon-gi is a writing that must be constituted causally by supplementing information about the psychology of the person and the motive of the act, Pil-gi does not intentionally disturb such subjective replenishment, and the descriptor is not created by the creator through accumulation of objective information. In Section 4, we compared the distance or difference between Pil-gi and Jeon-gi. I think it is possible to differentiate between the two through the difference of writing strategy. I think that it is hard to judge the present version in the case of . Finally, I think about the significance of Pil-gi literature at the present time. The new literature study is the study of various writings. In that sense, my conclusion is that a new literary book that embraces current non-literary forms is also needed to understand the pre-modern realistic writing, such as Pil-gi.

본고는 한국 전근대문학사에서 가장 큰 부분을 차지해온 필기의 성격을 검토하면서 이를 전기 양식과 비교해보고자 작성된 글이다. 특히 필기와 전기의 차이를 형상화 능력의 우열로 환원하는 것이 아니라 글쓰기전략 혹은 글쓰기 태도의 차이로 병렬해서 파악해보자는 것이 필자의 애초 문제의식이었다. 이를 위해 1절과 2절에서는 우선 필기 개념은 다시금 생각해 보았다. 필기적 글쓰기가 전근대문학의 잡다한 산문들을 포섭하면서 經・史・文의 반열에 들지 못하는 글쓰기들을 포괄하는 폭넓은 개념으로 사용되었고, 그 결과 소설이라는 개념과 의미영역이 흡사해진 점을 살펴보았다. 3절에서는 필기적 글쓰기와 전기적 글쓰기가 애초 다른 글쓰기전략의 산물이었음을 주장하였다. 허구성이나 문식성 정도로 양자의 차이를 설명하긴 어렵다. 전기는 서술자가 인물의 심리와 행위의 동기 등에 관한 정보를 보충해주어서 인과적으로 구성되어야만 하는 글쓰기라면, 필기는 그러한 주관적 보충을 의도적으로 멀리하며 객관적인 정보의 누적을 통해 서술자가 作意에 의해 창작하는 것이 아니라 다만 있었던 사실을 傳述할 뿐이라는 점을 강조한다. 그 결과 파편적이고 단편적인 서사에 머물기는 하지만, 그 파편성과 단편성이 역으로 전언의 사실성을 보강해준다. 4절에서는 필기적 글쓰기와 전기적 글쓰기의 거리 혹은 차이를 조선전기의 원혼 서사와 저승체험 서사 9편을 통해 비교해보았다. 무엇이 전기이고 필기인지 판단하기는 어렵지만, 글쓰기전략의 차이를 통해 양자의 차이를 구별할 수 있다는 것이 필자의 생각이었다. 이에 따르면 특히 문제시되는 것은 <설공찬전>이다. 이는 경험적 사실을 전술하는 필기인가, 아니면 우언을 통해 어떤 진실을 전달하고자 하는 전기인가. 작가는 단지 누적적 전술을 통해 사실을 보고하고 있는가, 아니면 보충을 통해 인물과 행위를 인과적으로 구성하고 있는가. 현재의 판본으로는 판단하기 어렵다고 필자의 생각하고 있다. 마지막으로 맺음말에서는 현재의 시점에서 필기문학의 의의에 대해서 생각해보았다. 필기 연구자들이 느끼는 근대적 문학관의 한계는 절실한 것이지만, 이를 전근대의 복원을 통해 해결할 수는 없다. 새로운 문학이란 紋의 학문, 즉 다양한 글쓰기를 탐구하는 학문일 수밖에 없다. 그런 점에서 현재의 비문학적 양식들을 포섭하는 새로운 문학관은 필기 같은 전근대 사실적 글쓰기를 이해하는 데도 필요하다는 것이 필자의 결론이다.
