This paper explores the essence of unconsciousness by considering the relationship between the unconscious and the description of the unconscious in art experiments. The description of the unconscious is mainly revealed in random states. Hence, unconsciousness is also considered in states of disorder or randomness. Therefore, traces of descriptions of the unconscious can conversely bring about an understanding of the essence of the unconscious, which can be expected to expand the role of unconsciousness in the practice of art. The work of surrealists, expressed in a random form, makes it appear as if the unconscious exists in a disordered state without a system. This random form also appears in generative art based on generative aesthetics, which derives from the use of a certain autonomous system, beyond the control of the artist. However, the random form in generative art is due to the unpredictability of the components between rules and autonomy, and the result of this interaction becomes a new order which differs from preexisting order. In other words, the disorder generated within the system can be regarded as a very particular form of disorder; therefore, the random form is the result of disorder caused by order, not by disorder itself. In addition, studies of the initiation of unconsciousness in psychology, evolutionary psychology, and neuroscience show that the unconscious comes from the interaction of the cranial nerves and language, suggesting that the unconscious is a self-evolving entity with an independent structure akin to language through the relationship between language and unconsciousness. This view is considered more closely through the concept of structured unconsciousness, as expressed by Lacan. Thus, the unconscious becomes an autonomous system in contemporary art that explores the interaction between different elements within a system.
