This paper aims to verify the distinctive feature of Yun Ki and Yi Ok’s prose allegories which dealt with social issues and conflicts. Yun Ki and Yi Ok actively produced many prose allegories with unique critical points of views and observations by using various literary aspects.Yun Ki and Yi Ok could be categorized as “alienated literati” in 18th century Chosen, but they took distinctive paths. Moreover, they used different measures and approach to deal with their ordeal by writing various prose allegories.This paper put more focus on their prose allegories which contain political musings to extract concrete subject matters and literary technics. In addition, the paper aims to analyze the authors’ outlooks on their era and aesthetic aspects of their artworks.The most distinctive political subjects of their prose allegories are corrupted state exams, social disparities among literati groups, and the hardships of subjugated classes. Also, they depicted ideal image of rulers and the agony of ordinary lives with a cynical and ironic tone.Yun Ki and Yi Ok were privileged to experience the dynamics of 18th century Chosen. However they failed to get bureaucrat positions due to lineage and political issues. As authors who maintained critical point of views, they chose to write sharp prose allegories with various technics such as contrast and satire.Prose allegories of Yun Ki and Yi Ok should receive more attentions on their literary achievements, and their artworks should be examined along with many other authors’ prose allegories in Chosen dynasty to understand the history of prose allegory holistically.

본 논문은 무명자 윤기와 문무자 이옥의 우언 작품들을 통해, 그들이 인식한 사회문제와 작가의 세계관을 살피고 우언 서사의 특징적인 면모를 밝히고자 한다. 윤기와 이옥은 소외된 문인이라는 공통점을 지녔지만, 그들이 시대에 대응하는 양상과 문학관은 현저히 달랐다. 본고는 두 작가의 다양한 우언 작품 중, 정치성이 두드러진 작품들에 집중하여 그들이 구현해 낸 우언 서사의 주제적 측면과 기법적 측면을 살폈다. 그리고 두 작가의 세계관과 개별 우언의 미적 특색을 드러내고자 했다.윤기와 이옥은 우언 작품들을 통해, 당대 과거 제도의 문제점과 소외된 지식인의 좌절, 그리고 피지배층의 고난을 드러냈다. 뿐만 아니라 통치자의 존재 의미와 생활인의 고뇌를 냉소적이며 비판적인 어조에 담아냈다. 윤기와 이옥은 지식인으로서 18세기의 역동적 사회변화를 체험할 수 있었다. 그러나 불행히도, 관료라는 신분을 획득할 수 없었기에 비판적 지식인이라는 정체성을 갖게 되었다. 비판적 시선을 견지한 그들은 많은 서사 방식 중, 우언을 선택하였고, 비판적 시선과 생활인의 고뇌를 유기적으로 엮은 우언작품으로 남길 수 있었다. 윤기와 이옥의 우언은 작품의 사회 비판적 시선뿐만 아니라, 우언 서사의 기법적 측면과 완결성이라는 면에서도 주목받을 가치가 있다.
