In this article, I look at Choi In-hoon's 1959 short story ｢Raul's story｣along with the 2015 film ｢Son of Saul｣directed by László Nemes. These two works openly and indirectly evokes the Saul-Paul discourse. This paper is close to the current view, which explores the inner meaning of the creations containing the religious imagination using this discourse. The film ｢Son of Saul｣depicted the process of symbolic resurrection breaching the boundaries between special customs and universality of human beings around the burial of a boy in the Holocaust situation. In the meantime, ｢Raul story｣handled the corresponding period of Saul-Paul's material and constructed a new point outside the case through the fictional character Raul. In this article, the characters of both works are dying without any influence on the outside situation. The work which is closer to the "faithfulness of the event" seems to be the ｢Son of Saul｣which is more gruesome with the tragic situation of the case. ｢Raul's story｣rather features the trace of
existence that is excluded from the scene of the event. This is significant because it shows another exceptional condition different from visible and realistic misfortune. However, there remains a controversy regarding the relationship a similar 'Raul-type figure' has to do with historic and social responsibility. Choi In-hoon's other works, which are noteworthy about this issue, are the novel 󰡔Typhoon󰡕 and the play ｢Hans and Gretel｣which extended the background to overseas. The main characters are deeply thoughtful and try to make existential choice, but they reflect on their own responsibility while making excuses for their own mistakes. Raul corresponds to the roots of them in these works rather than most intellectuals of overall Choi In-hoon's literature.

본고에서는, 라슬로 네메즈(László Nemes) 감독의 2015년 영화 ｢사울의 아들｣과 함께 최인훈의 1959년 단편소설 ｢라울전｣을 살핀다. 이 두 작품은 직･간접적으로 사울-바울 담론을 환기시킨다. 본고는, 이 담론을 활용해 종교적 상상력이 포함된 창작물의 내적 의미를 고찰해보는 시론에 가깝다. 영화 ｢사울의 아들｣은 홀로코스트 상황 속 한 소년의 장례를 둘러싸고 특수한 관습과 인간 보편성의 경계가 흔들리며 상징적 부활에 이르는 과정을 영상화하였다. 한편 소설 ｢라울전｣은 사울-바울 소재의 해당 시기를 직접 다루며, 가상 인물 라울을 통해 그 사건 외부의 한 지점을 새로이 구축해 보였다. 본고에서 살핀 두 작품의 주인공 모두 외부 상황에 어떤 영향력도 미치지 못한 채 죽어가는데, ‘사건의 충실성’에 더 다가선 작품은 외적으로 더욱 참혹한 상황을 다루고 있는 ｢사울의 아들｣로 보인다. 소설 ｢라울전｣은 오히려 사건의 장에서 원천적으로 배제되는 존재의 흔적을 형상화한다. 이는 가시적이고 현실적인 불행과는 또 다른 차원의 예외 상태를 보여준다는 데 의의가 있다. 다만, 이와 유사한 ‘라울형 인물’이 역사적․사회적 책임과 맺는 관계에 대해서는 논쟁의 여지가 남는다. 이 문제와 관련해 주목되는 최인훈의 다른 작품은, 배경을 국외로까지 확장시킨 소설
