This study aims at examining Maurice Courant(1865-1935)’s assertion on ‘Origins of Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音)’. His claim on ‘Origins of Hunminjeongeum’ itself is not much different from the general hypothesis of the most western studies of the 19th century that the Korean alphabet is rooted in the Sanskrit script. However, translating to the West for the first time Hunminjeongeum(『訓民正音』) partially inserted in Donggukmunheonbigo(『東國文獻備考』) as well as in “Akgo(｢樂 考｣)” led him to discover the knowledge of Koreans on their own language. On the other hand, this remarkable insight on the Origins of Korean language and alphabet owes also his understanding of overall Korean literature and archives. As a result, encompassing the array of Korean publication, Maurice Courant unfolds the diffusion of Korean literature in Bibliographie Coréenne, where we can find his effort to discover the language studies comparable to the modern linguistic knowledge of the West.

본고의 목적은 모리스 쿠랑(Maurice Courant, 1865-1935)의 ‘훈민정음 기 원론’을 고찰하는 것이다. 물론 쿠랑의 ‘훈민정음 기원론’은 결론만을 놓고 본다면 한글이 梵字(산스크리트어 문자) 혹은 중국의 자모에서 비롯되었을 것이라는 서 구인의 통념적인 가설과 큰 차이점이 없는 것이었다. 그렇지만 쿠랑은 『東國文獻 備考』 ｢樂考｣에 부분적으로 수록되어 있는 『訓民正音』을 서구권에 최초로 번역 하여 알린 인물이었다. 그는 이 속에 담겨 있는 한국인의 언어학적 지식을 분명히 인식하고 있었다. 그에게 이러한 발견이 가능했던 이유는 무엇보다 한국문헌 전반 에 대한 그의 연구에 있었다. 이를 반영하듯이 19세기 말 한국문헌의 출판, 유통 현황이 담겨져 있는 그의 『한국서지』 전반에는 서구의 근대 언어학적 지식에 대응 될만한 한국의 어학서적을 찾고자 한 그의 노력과 그 결실이 남겨져 있었다.
