Utopia is a society that everyone has dreamed of. Nevertheless, a positive view on its practical realization has been a few. Yet, Toegye had never doubted on its success. Toegey's Philosophy is characterized by Zhuli philosophy that strongly emphasizes on its deep reverence for Li. This paper investigates the philosophical base of utopia by suggesting its thoughts of Toegye's. In liqi theory of Toegye, it seems to be against the rule of middle path that 'li is being empty.' 'li and qi is not considered as one.' which seems to be against the rule of 중용 that 'Li is being empty.' However, Toegye insists an equality of all things and the absoluteness and ubiquity of li based on such theory. In Toegye's thought, the world is the emergence of Li and 'all creations grow all together and never harm one another.' Also, among all creations with equal values human beings are charged with the most significant responsibility since they are the distinguished beings of all. Toegye claims that the success of utopia is up to human beings whether they have accomplished their own resposibilities or not. The whole world is where all creations contribute in various ways and maintain their universality and uniqueness, and live to devote the rest of the world in their own way. Therefore human beings are able to establish the foundation by wholly completing 'being-a-self' of individual in an universality.

대동사회(大同社會)는 모든 사람이 꿈꾸는 이상적인 사회이다. 그러나 그 실현가능성 에 대해서 긍정적인 견해를 가진 사람은 많지 않다. 그러나 퇴계(退溪)는 대동사회에 대 한 실현가능성을 의심치 않았다. 퇴계의 철학은 리(理)를 존숭하고 우위에 놓은 주리철학 (主理哲學)으로 특징지어진다. 본 논문은 퇴계의 주리철학에 근거하여 그 사상에서 제시 하고 있는 대동사회의 철학적 기초를 정리해 보았다. 퇴계의 리기론은 ‘리와 기는 하나가 아니다’, ‘리는 비어 있다’라고 하여 중용적 원칙을 위배한 듯 보인다. 그러나 퇴계는 이러한 이론에 근거하여 리의 절대성과 편재성, 만물의 가치적 동등성을 주장한다. 퇴계사상에서 세계는 하나의 리가 다양하게 드러난 곳[理一 分殊]으로서, ‘만물은 함께 자라면서 서로를 해치지 않는’ 존재이다. 그리고 동등한 가치 를 가지는 다양한 존재 속에서 사람은 가장 빼어난 존재로서 가장 중한 책임을 가진다. 퇴계는 대동사회의 실현여부는 바로 사람이 사람이라는 이름에 걸맞는 책임을 완수하 는가 달려 있다고 주장한다. 세상은 하나의 리가 다양한 모습으로 펼쳐지는 곳이며, 만물 은 각자의 영역에서 보편성과 특수성을 온전히 유지하며 살아가는 것으로 이 세계에 기 여하고 있다. 따라서 인간 또한 인간의 보편성인 사람다움과 개인의 특수성인 나다움을 온전히 실현함으로써 대동사회의 기반을 구축할 수 있는 것이다.
