This study intends to propose a modern utilizing method of Confucian culture contents by centering on several cases of Seowon utilizations in Youngnam region together with forthcoming Seowon. Seowon is educational institution by aiming at fostering younger students so as to evaluate the lives of persons who realized Confucian ideology highly, and move toward attitudes of such lives. Evaluations on lives were made through the function of orientation which recognized oriented persons as adults, and fostering younger students was achieved through the function of pursuing study. It was the reason that matching between unfamiliar ancestrial rites and pursuing study was natural in Seowon, educational institution of premodern society, if looked from the modern society. Specially, the standard of orientation having been suggested by Yi Hwang became strong driver so that younger students could live according to lives of Confucian scholars by recognizing persons who had region and connections as adults and letting them oriented. It was likely that Joseon Dynasty fell into stronger Confucian society than any other society accordingly. Based on above findings, this study suggested cases that revived utilization and educational functions as tourism contents having been done in a lot of Seowons in Youngnam now. In addition, utilization potential as culture experiential space of regional-attachment type was proposed too. Besides, an utilization method of Seowon as the subject of being able to recover regional memorial functions through an modernized interpretation about orientation function was suggested in this research. Through recovery of memorial functions having been lost in Korea, cherishing the memory of persons who lived exemplary lives is made, and the feature of people to learn in each local society are suggested based on this. Of course, its scope and field, detailed methods etc. are still left as difficult matters, but trying to be worried is necessary in aspects of grouping directions. Furthermore, a reviving plan of Soewon’s original functions having been kept in traditional society through linkage with colleges was offered. It is the method of linking role models in the region with the foundational idea, and bringing Seowon’s functions having been functioned as oriented knowledge network of the region to modern times through ‘a symbol called Seowon.’ Therefore, original functions having been kept in Seowon were reinterpreted, and modern use was proposed on its bases.

이 논문은 영남지역의 서원 활용의 몇 가지 사례들을 중심으로, 향후 서원을 중심으로 한 유교문화콘텐츠의 현대적 활용 방안을 제시해 보려는 것이다. 서원은 유학적 이념을 실현했던 사람들의 삶을 높이 평가하고, 그러한 삶의 자세를 지향할 수 있도록 후학을 기 르는 목적에서 세워진 교육기관이다. 삶에 대한 평가는 배향된 사람을 성인으로 인정해 주는 배향의 기능을 통해 이루어졌고, 후학을 기르는 것은 강학講學 기능을 통해 이루어 졌다. 현대사회에서 보면 낯선 제사와 강학의 만남이 전근대 사회의 교육기관인 서원에 서는 자연스러웠던 이유이다. 특히 이황이 제시했던 배향의 기준은 지역과 연고를 가진 사람을 성인으로 인정하고 배향하게 함으로써, 후학들로 하여금 유학자의 삶을 따라 살 게하는 강력한 동인動因이 되었다. 조선이 다른 어떤 사회보다 강력한 유학적 사회로 빠 져들게 된 이유이다. 이와 같은 기반 위에서 이 논문은 현재 영남의 여러 서원들에서 이루어지고 있는 관광 콘텐츠로서의 활용성과 교육기능을 살려 낸 사례들을 제시하였다. 더불어 지역밀착형 문 화체험공간으로서의 활용 가능성도 제안했다. 이와 더불어 이 논문에서는 배향 기능의 현대적 해석을 통해 지역 메모리얼 기능을 회복시키는 주체로 서원이 활용될 수 있는 방 안을 제시했다. 한국의 잃어버린 메모리얼 기능의 회복을 통해 모범적 삶을 산 사람들을 추모하고, 이를 기반으로 각 지역사회에서 따라 배워야 할 사람들의 상을 제시해 주는 것 이다. 물론 그 범위와 분야, 구체적 방법 등은 여전히 어려운 문제로 남지만, 방향의 모색 이라는 측면에서 고민해 볼 필요가 있다. 나아가 서원이 전통사회에서 가졌던 본래 기능 을 대학과의 연계를 통해 살려보는 안도 제안했다. 지역의 본받을 만한 인물을 창학이념 과 연계시키고, 그 지역의 중심 지식네트워크로 기능했던 서원의 기능을 ‘서원이라는 상 징물’을 통해 현대로 가져오는 방식이다. 서원이 가지고 있었던 본래 기능을 현대적으로 재해석하고, 그 기반 위에서 현대적인 활용성을 제안한 것이다.
