One of the most important objectives of theological education is to help students to establish their own theological identity. Especially, a theological seminary that belongs to a certain denomination should practice theological education that establishes the theological identity of the denomination. The theological education of Presbyterian University & Theological Seminary (PUTS) should be based on the school’s theology, and all the students should practice their ministries based on the school’s theological identity. There are two kinds of approaches for understanding the theological identity of PUTS. One is a normative approach, which focuses on understanding relevant theological theories and looking into theological manifestos, faith confessions, and the educational mission of PUTS. The other is a descriptive approach, which focuses on understanding the current theological position of the students in PUTS. The present study is related to the latter. It is very important to know the current theological position of students in order to practice a ‘welldirected’ theological education. In 1985, when I was in my first year of the M.Div. program at PUTS, I researched the theological identity of M.Div. students within PUTS at the time using a survey. In 2016, 30 years after that study, I attempt to understand the theological identity of the present M.Div. students by the same way. What is the current figure of the theological identity of PUTS? What are the differences in theological identity between the M.Div. student of 30 years ago and of the present? Are the students in 2016 more conservative or progressive than the students in 1985? In order to answer these questions, I carried out a survey using the same questionnaires, and analyzed the outcome of the survey. The result of the study shows that the theological position of M.Div. students of PUTS is on somewhat of a middle path, inclining neither to the conservative nor to the progressive. Also, the study discloses that there are meaningful differences in theological tendencies among the 1st year students, the 2nd year students, and the 3rd year students. The progressive tendency of the students’ theology increases according to the number of years of study. The 1st year students are the most conservative, and the 3rd year students are the most progressive. Theological education at PUTS should be a process of helping students to establish their own theological identity on the basis of the theology of PUTS. It is an important educational task to narrow the gap between the normative and the descriptive in the theological identity of PUTS. I hope that this study will provide a basis for a meaningful change of curriculum in the respective areas of biblical theology, systematic theology, church history, and practical theology at PUTS.

신학교육의 중요한 목적 중의 하나는 학생들이 신학의 정체성을 확립 하도록 돕는 것이다. 특히 교단 신학교의 경우는 그 교단의 신학 정체성을 확립하는 신학교육을 실천해야 한다. 장로회신학대학교(이하 장신대)의 신 학교육은 장신 신학에 근거한 것이 되어야 하고, 장신대를 졸업하는 모든 학생들은 장신 신학의 정체성에 근거한 사역을 감당할 수 있어야 한다. 장신대의 신학 정체성을 이해하기 위해서는 두 가지 접근이 가능한데 하나는 당위적인 접근(normative approach)이요 다른 하나는 기술적인 접 근(descriptive approach)이다. 전자는 장신 신학과 관련한 신학자들의 신 학이론을 탐구하거나 장신신학과 관련하여 발표된 신학성명서나 신앙고백 문, 교육이념이나 목적을 살피는 것이다. 후자는 현재 장신공동체 구성원 들이 어떤 신학적 입장을 지니고 있는지를 현상적으로 파악하는 것이다. 이 연구는 후자에 초점을 두고 있다. 학생들의 신학 의식을 제대로 이해할 때만이 올바른 신학 정체성 교육이 가능하기 때문이다. 본 연구자는 장신대 신대원 1학년 때인 1985년에 이런 관심을 갖고 당 시 신대원생들을 대상으로 ‘장신신학 정체성에 관한 의식 조사연구’를 실시 하였다. 그로부터 30여년이 지난 2016년도의 장신대 신대원생들은 어떤 신학적 정체성을 지니고 있는가? 과연 30년 전과 현재의 신대원생은 신학 적 정체성에 있어서 어떤 차이를 보이고 있는가? 더 보수화되었는가? 더 진보화되었는가? 이러한 문제의식을 지니고 1985년 조사연구 당시의 질 문지 그대로 2016년도 신대원생들에게 배포하여 ‘장신신학 정체성에 관한 의식 조사연구’를 실시하였다. 그리고 1985년도의 결과와 비교하여 분석하 였다. 연구의 결과, 전체적으로 장신대 신대원생들이 신학적으로 중도적인 입장인 것으로 드러났는데, 2016년을 1985년과 비교해볼 때 보다 진보적 인 성향으로 변화된 것으로 나타났다. 학년별로는 학년이 증가할수록 더욱 진보화되는 경향이 있는 것으로 파악되었는데, 1학년이 가장 보수적이고, 3학년이 가장 진보적인 것으로 드러났다. 장신대의 신학교육은 이러한 학생들의 신학적 의식과 대화하면서 이 들이 스스로 자신의 신학을 장신대가 추구하는 장신신학의 정체성으로 더 가까이 나아가도록 돕는 과정이 되어야 한다. 이 연구결과를 토대로 성서 신학, 조직신학, 역사신학 및 실천신학의 제 분야에서 구체적인 수업의 개 선이 이루어지기를 기대한다.
