The purpose of this paper is to explore reform alternatives to the missionary training of the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK). To nurture quality missionaries in rapidly changing and unpredictable age, I propose a return to the foundational ethos of missionary education. The PCK missionary education is based on the denomination's mission theology, which is none other than the Missio Dei. Theology is the foundational ethos, the identity, the world view, and the root. For mission to flourish, a coherent theology and its manifestation in daily life are necessary. But our missionary ethos and policies are not so apparent in the mission field. The PCK missionaries do not possess a firm hold of their identity or their sense of community. Due to the lack of mission theology and policies, much of the missions tend toward individualistic or individual church-based activities. The solution to these issues is to return to the original missionary ethos and to put it into practice. In response to such issues in the PCK denominational missionary training and in missions overall, this paper proposes first a restoration of the PCK mission theology, missionary policies, and the PCK identity as articulated by the statement of purpose in missionary duties education. Secondly, to find specific points for improvement the course satisfaction surveys of the latest cohort (101-1) of missionary training were analyzed to draw out some points for improvement. The third and the main section of the research proposes a reform in the four core aspects education – purpose, content (curriculum), method fo instruction, and assessment. Finally, the need for reform on the matters of missionaries' kids, the structural issues of missionary education are mentioned, as well as a strategy to select preparatory missionary candidates three years prior to commissioning for the purpose of missionary training in cooperation with the deconomination's world mission headquarters, the seminary, and the supporting church. This paper critically examines the current practice of the PCK missionary training and presents alternatives for its improvement. My aim is not to present ultimate solutions to issues in missionary education. Rather, the research is a result of agonized wrestling and reflection on what must be done to improve missionary education. “To let the bell resound farther, the bell must ache more”.28) The effort to return to the foundational ethos of true theology may create a butterfly effect toward the flourishing of the mission of the PCK and the Korean church.

이 글은 개혁적인 측면에서 PCK 선교사 훈련에 대한 새로운 대안을 제안하는 것이 목적이다. 필자는 미래를 예측할 수 없는 급변하는 시대에 양질의 선교사를 양육하기 위해서 선교사 교육의 근본정신으로 돌아갈 것 을 주장하였다. PCK 선교사 교육의 근본정신은 총회 선교신학이다. 그것 은 바로 ‘하나님의 선교’다. 신학은 근본정신이며 정체성이며 세계관이며 뿌리다. 건강한 선교를 위해서는 신학이 분명해야 하며 그 신학에 따른 삶 이 나타나야 한다. 그러나 우리의 선교정신과 정책은 선교지에서 잘 나타 나지 않는다. PCK 선교사는 정체성은 물론 공동체 의식도 강하지 않다. 선교신학과 정책의 부재로 인해서 선교의 개인화 현상이나 개교회주의 선 교가 강화되고 있다. 이러한 선교문제를 해결할 수 있는 길은 본래의 선교 정신으로 돌아가 그 정신을 실천하는 것이다. 이 글은 총회선교사 훈련에 서부터 PCK 선교가 안고 있는 문제 해결을 위해서 첫째로 총회선교신학 과 선교정책을 견고히 하기 위해서 먼저 총회 선교사업무교육의 목적에 나 타나는 PCK 선교신학과 선교정책과 PCK 정체성을 회복해야 할 것을 강 조하였다. 두 번째로 현재 선교사 교육에서 개선점을 찾아보기 위해 금번 101-1차 선교사 교육에 참여했던 선교사 후보생의 평가서를 살펴보았다. 그리고 그 평가서에 나타나는 선교사 훈련에서 개선이 필요한 것을 찾아보 았다. 이 글의 가장 중심부인 세 번째에서 선교사 교육의 개혁방안을 교육 의 목적과 교육의 내용(커리큘럼)과 교육방법과 교육평가라는 4가지 교육 의 본질적 과정에 대한 개혁을 제안하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 선교사 자 녀문제와 선교사 교육의 구조문제에 대한 개혁과 아울러 선교사 훈련을 선 교사파송 3년 전부터 선교사 후보생으로 선별하여 총회 세계선교부와 신 학교와 후원교회가 협력하여 선교사를 양육하는 것을 제안하였다 필자는 PCK 선교사 교육의 향상을 위해 현재 진행하고 있는 선교사 훈련을 비판적인 관점에서 살펴보며 새로운 제안을 해 보았다. 이 글은 선 교사 교육의 정답을 제시하는 것에 목적이 있지 않다. 다만 더 나은 선교사 교육이 되려면 어떻게 하는 것이 좋을까를 아파하며 고민해 본 것이다. “종 소리를 더 멀리 보내기 위하여 종은 더 아파야 한다.”1) 올바른 신학에 근거 한 근본정신으로 돌아가고자 하는 고민이 PCK 선교와 한국교회 선교를 건 강하게 만드는 나비효과(butterfly effect)를 일으킬 수 있기를 바란다
