The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the composition of Cho Sung Joon‘s cupronickel craftworks, and to highlight the various techniques, tools and shapes used in forming structure. The research range covers Brasier- Square, Cupronickel Hairpin, Cupronickel Candlestick and Hexagonal Cupronickel Candlestick and refer to new tools and designed forming blocks were developed to produce the craftworks made with cupronickel. In the Brasier-square, the four sides were finely hammered and decorated with inlay that do not apply heat. In Cupronickel hairpin and cupronickel candlestick, various forming blocks and tools were made to produce fine and precise forms. In the hexagonal cupronickel candlestick, tools for expressing the faceted form was made and a method of assembling the part was devised. In this way, Cho Sung Joon's cupronickel craftworks is worth nothing that reveal beautiful colors that are characteristic of cupronickel material and produce many anvils and tools to make cupronickel craftworks in an effective way. Although cupronickel is a difficult material to fabricate, if you can make and use tools suitable for shape production, you can get complete masterpieces in every works. This can be a suggestion for a reinterpretation of value of cupronickel craft works and a creative approach to metalsmithing with cupronickel.

본 연구는 백동소재로 제작된 조성준의 작품 사례를 조사하고 분석하여 표현 형태에 따라 사용되는 여러 기법·도구·조형 형태를 재조명하는 것이 목적이다. 조성준의 백동공예품 중에서 백동사각손화로, 백동비녀, 백동촛대, 육각백동촛대를 연구 범위로 하였고 선택된 각 공예품의 제작 과정별 기법을 관찰하고 형태를 완성하기 위해 개발된 새로운 도구나 틀 제작 사례를 분석하였다. 백동사각손화로에서는 네 면을 정교하게 망치성형하고 열을 가하지 않는 상감기법으로 표면 장식을 하였다. 백동비녀와 백동촛대에서는 세밀하고 정밀한 형태를 제작하기 위하여 다양한 모루와 정을 만들었으며 육각백동촛대에서는 각면형태를 표현하기 위한 틀을 제작하고 부분으로 조립하는 방법을 고안하였다. 이와 같이 조성준의 판금작업은 백동의 특성인 아름다운 색을 드러내고 여러 모루와 정을 제작하여 효과적인 방법으로 백동공예품을 제작하는 점에서 주목받을만하다. 백동소재가 가공이 어려운 소재임에는 틀림없으나 형태제작에 적합한 도구를 제작하고 활용할 수 있다면 각진 형태와 자연스런 곡선 형태, 크고 작은 모든 작품에서 완성도 있는 결과물을 얻을 수 있었다. 이는 백동공예품의 가치를 재조명하고 백동공예품 제작자들의 창의적인 접근을 위한 제안이 될 수 있다.
