Vulnerability area is a concept of social space area and dictionary definition is a compound word that combine vulnerable and region as a space area. The vulnerability area research is growing dramatically since early of 1990. In this situation, while the number of vulnerability area studies have been increased from the late of 2010, there is no comprehensive literature review not only describing the trend of vulnerability area research but also shed light on as a living residence where the people who underprivileged or socially weak live a life. In this sense, the purpose of this paper is to seek a trend of the whole domestic studies of vulnerability area and find characteristics with implications. To seek a trend, this study organizes the domestic research papers in thematically. In the result, the subject of the vulnerability area research studies is getting diverse. However, they are still in the early stage and cannot progress from the fragmentary and simple research. Especially, not only the approaching interdisciplinary perspective of vulnerability area but also diversity studying the vulnerability area based on the consilience stance in the geography field is needed to in-depth study on vulnerability area.

취약지역은 사회적 공간의 개념으로, 사전적 의미는 무르고 약하다는 ‘취약(脆弱)’과 전체 사회를 어떤 특 징으로 나눈 일정한 공간 영역인 ‘지역(地域)’의 합성어로서 영어로는 Vulnerability area 혹은 Weak area 등으로 표현된다. 우리나라에서는 1990년대 이후로 지금까지 취약지역에 관한 여러 측면의 연구들이 진행되어 오고 있으 나 아직까지 취약지역 연구들의 연구동향을 분석한 연구와 사회적 약자나 소외계층이 거주하는 거주지로서의 취 약지역에 대한 접근은 전무하다. 이에 본 논문은 취약지역 관련 국내 연구논문들의 동향을 전반적으로 파악하고 그 특징과 시사점을 찾는데 목적이 있다. 연구 동향을 파악하는 데에는 주제별로 연구자의 주관에 의해 분류하였다. 그 결과, 비록 주제가 다양화되고 있긴 하지만 국내 취약지역 관련 연구는 아직 발전하고 있는 단계에 있다고 사료 되며 향후 질적, 양적인 성장을 꾀하고 내실 있는 연구 성과들을 축적할 필요가 있다고 보인다. 나아가, 공간을 다 루는 지리적 분야에서도 좀 더 폭넓고 다양한 관점으로 취약지역에 대해 접근할 필요가 있다고 판단되며, 동시에 이러한 공간들이 우리사회에서 차지하는 입지와 위상을 면밀히 고찰하고 여러 가지 현실적인 이유들로 그동안 주 목받지 못한 분야들의 취약지역들이 조명 받을 수 있도록 노력해야 한다고 판단된다.
