During the 1920s and 1930s, big fluctuations have happened to an established theory on the origin of the Japanese. The established theory that immigrants from the Korean Peninsula in ancient times had a big influence on the formation of the Japanese was now denied, and the view that the Japanese had been a homogeneous nation from ancient times became the mainstream theory. This view has survived until the 1980’s. In the process of this paradigm shift, scholars such as Hasebe Kotondo and Kiyono Kenji had a decisive influence. They were researchers who espoused the excellency and blood purity of th Japanese as it originated from nationalistic views of history centered on the Emperor (Kokoku Shikan). Moreover their theory of a homogeneous nation was backed up scientifically by eugenics and statistics, fields that were in fashion at that time. The chance of occurrence of their theory was very political and arbitrary, but the fact has not been pointed out by scholars for a long time, and thus the influence of such studies on similar learning fields was immense. As a result, the existence of the immigrants from the ancient Korean Peninsula who indeed had a big influence on the formation of the Japanese, kept to be denied.
