Species inventory in different ecosystems is one the most elementary works in ecosystem management and conservation, and species monitoring is essential for tracking the population changes according to environmental change. Macro-moths were captured over a 7-year period from 2005 to 2011 at various sites in Jirisan National Park (JNP). A total of 1,020 species from 17 families were collected and the compilation of the previous records and the present study comprised 1,373 species in JNP. Dominant taxa are Noctuoidea (747 species, 54%) and Geometroidea (458 species, 33%). The moth inventory of JNP represented about 72% of the species described in Korea. This high moth richness in the JNP region could be resulted from large area, high elevation, the geographic location on the southern tip of the longest mountain chain and the legal protection by the national park.

다양한 생태계에 서식하는 생물 종 목록을 작성하는 것은 생태계 보전 및 관리를 위한 필수적인 작업이 며, 지속적인 모니터링은 환경변화에 따른 개체군 변화를 추적할 수 있다. 2005년부터 2011년까지 7년 동안 대형 나방 모니터링을 실시한 결과 5상과 17과 1,020종이 채집되었다. 선행 연구를 통해 기록된 종과 지난 7년간 대형 나방 채집으로 밝혀진 지리산에 서식하는 대형나방은 6상과 20과 1,373종이다. 밤나방상과가 지리산에 서식하는 대 형나방 종의 54%(747종)를 차지해 가장 많았으며, 다음으로 자나방상과 33%(458종)로 나타났다. 선행연구와 이번 연구를 통해 지리산 지역에 분포하는 대형나방 종수(1,373종)는 국내 기록된 종수(1,920종)의 약 72%에 해당한다. 지리산이 이렇게 높은 곤충 종 다양성을 유지할 수 있는 이유는 넓은 면적과 높은 고도, 백두대간 산맥의 마지막 에 위치한 지리적, 지형적 특성뿐만 아니라 국립공원으로 보호되는 지역이기 때문으로 생각한다.
