Yeongsanhoesang is perhaps the most frequently researched piece of the traditional Korean music. It is also one of the most frequently performed pieces and, as such, is held in high regard. Most people, however, understand very little about Yeongsanhoesang. In this essay, I seek to answer some fundamental questions about Yeongsanhoesang. In the 15th century court, two versions of Yeongsanhoesang, Yeongsanhoesangman and Yeongsanhoesangryeong were performed. I believe Yeongsanhoesangryeong to be the origins of the many pieces of Yeongsanhoesang that are performed today. Yeongsanhoesangryeong was divided into wind and string versions like the Boheojaryeong and Yeomillakryeong that were also divided into string and wind versions. Wind and string versions of Yeongsanhoesang were developed in the court and among the general population. The wind-court version of Yeongsanhoesang is Samhyeonyeongsanhoesang Sangyeongsan. The wind-folk version of Yeongsanhoesang is Daeyeongsan. The string-court version of Yeongsanhoesang is Pyeongjohoesang Sangyeongsan. The string-folk version of Yeongsanhoesang is Yeongsanhoesang Sangyeongsan.

국악곡 중 단일악곡으로 가장 많은 연구가 수행된 곡은 아마도 영산회상일 것 같다. 실제 연주도 가장 많이 되고 음악적 비중도 가장 높은 곡이 영산회상이다. 하지만 피상적인 지식을 넘어 조금 깊숙한 질문을 하면 말문이 막히는 것은 영산회상도 예외가 아닌 듯하다. 이렇듯 영산회상에 대해 우리는 모르는 문제가 너무 많다. 이 글은 이중에서 근본적인 질문 몇 가지에 대한 답을 모색한다. 15세기에 궁중에서 영산회상은 ‘영산회상만’과 ‘영산회상령’의 두 모습으로 연주되었다. 이중 ‘영산회상령’을 현재 연주되는 영산회상 계통곡들의 원곡으로 추정하였다. ‘영산회상령’은 다시 ‘관’ 버전과 ‘현’ 버전으로 분화된다. 이 점은 보허자령과 여민락령이 각각 ‘관’과 ‘현’의 두 버전으로 분화되는 것과 궤를 같이 한다. 영산회상의 ‘관’ 버전과 ‘현’ 버전은 다시 이것이 놓이는 연주공간에 따라 각각 궁중 버전과 민간 버전으로 분화된다. ‘관’－궁중 버전이 삼현영산회상 상령산이고, ‘관’－민간 버전이 대영산이며, ‘현’－궁중 버전이 평조회상 상령산이고, ‘현’－민간 버전이 영산회상 상령산이다.
