20th century kisaeng not only followed the tradition of the previous era, but also executed the performing arts of the new era. This article covers how kisaeng, as the female musicians and dancers, accommodated the music and dance of the previous era, and how they, as artists, dealt with the new trends. In early 20th century, there were a lot of cultural transformations including the inflow of modernism. Accordingly, the activities of kisaeng had changed significantly. In this article, the variations between generations and between organizations are discussed according to the premodern-to-modern change, revealing the formation process of modern kisaeng. Entering the 20th century, the concept of kisaeng was newly defined based on the new political and economical considerations. Japanese government made kisaeng both the professional performers and the prostitutes wholly based on the capitalism. This whole change of the role of kisaeng can be divided into three periods. In the first one, new kisaeng organizations evolved even though their activities stuck to the premodern ones. In the second one, some kisaeng organizations tried to deliberately avoid the premodern activities. In the final one, they generally lacked in the role of music and dance performers.

20세기 기생은 전 시기 가무의 계승이자 동시에 새로운 시대의 가무를 담당했던 주체이기도 했다. 이 글은 20세기 전반기에 기생이 전 시기의 여성음악가로서의 관례와 가무를 어떻게 수용하고 있고, 또 당대의 예술가로서 시대적 변화에 어떻게 대응하고 있는지를 살펴본 것이다. 20세기는 세대 간, 개별 조직 간 변화와 별도로 전근대와 근대로의 전환도 이루어지는 시기였기 때문에 기생 활동의 변화 역시 복잡한 양상을 띤다. 따라서 이 글에서는 전근대에서 근대로의 전환 때문에 발생한 변화는 무엇이고, 세대 간, 조직 간의 변화는 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 이 과정 중에서 근대기생의 성립과정을 확인할 수 있다. 20세기 들어서면서 기생을 규정하는 제도적 장치와 경제적 기반이 달라졌다. 일제에 의해 기생은 기예 전문가와 매춘부 사이에 놓이게 되었고 자본주의를 바탕으로 대중 사회에 놓이게 되었다. 이러한 대전환은 시기별, 집단 별로 그 양상을 달리하는데, 기생조직의 구성경위와 기예 학습을 근거로 근대기생으로의 전환 과정을 세 시기로 나누어 볼 수 있었다. 초기에는 전근대의 관례를 지속하면서도 근대의 방식으로 기생조직을 만들기 시작한 시기, 두 번째 시기는 조직 별로 개성을 가지고 전근대의 관례를 의도적으로 넘어서려는 시기, 세 번째 시기는 조직의 안정성은 확보하나 조직별 가무의 개성이 후퇴하는 시기로 나누어짐을 알 수 있었다.
