Since the recently compiled list of papers on the history of Goguryeo doesn’t seem to adequately reflect the achievements of the research into the music and dance of the time, this study intends to complement it. In addition, by grasping the studies of both South and North Korea in the fields, it also seeks what should be studied in the future. Three researchers of North Korea have been engaged in the research for 37 years and produced nine pieces of papers on the subject while 40 researchers of south Korea have taken part in the research and come up with 48 pieces of papers for 56 years. Superficially it’s easy to say that the interest and study in the fields have been more active in South Korea. although the achievements of North Korea in the fields appear somewhat trivial compared to those of South Korea, however, their contribution, especially in their study on the musical instruments and the types of performance that appear on the murals, can’t be negligible. With all these taken into account, there are a few things to be considered for further researches : Firstly, concerning the murals in the ancient Goguryeo tomb, the focal point of Academic researches has lied in what the musical instrument held by the Juaksang should be or what its name should be. It is important, of course, to identify the instrument, but it’s all the more important to find out about in what context the performance was delivered. It might be a significant clue to revealing the religions and the mindset of Goguryeo people. Secondly, It’s very important to make an effort to keep excavating and introducing new materials into the study in order to keep the interest in the subject alive, especially given the reality in which it’s very hard to get direct access to them. In addition, since those materials that have already been introduced are scattered around, it’s inconvenient and inefficient to conduct research. Therefore, it’s necessary to collect in one place the documents about Goguryeo music and the image materials of dance and music from Goguryeo murals. Further more, a project for anthology of the papers concerning Goguryeo music might be attempted. These efforts are very important in terms of further studies to be built on. Lastly, thanks to the recent academic trend in research that prefers to integrate different fields, the achievements made in other fields, such as history and art history, help expand the horizon of the research into Goguryeo music. It’s important to make the best of the achievements of related fields in order to interpret Goguryeo music culture in the social and cultural context of Goguryeo.

본고는 최근에 정리된 고구려사 관련 연구논저 목록에 음악과 무용 방면의 연구성과가 제대로 반영되지 않아 이를 보완하려는 측면에서 지금까지 연구성과를 보충하였고, 남한과 북한의 연구경향을 파악하여 앞으로 요청되는 과제를 모색해 보고자 마련하였다. 북한의 경우 약 37년 동안 9편의 연구물과 3명의 연구자가 참여한 데 비하면 남한의 연구는 56년 동안 연구물이 48편에 이르며, 참여한 연구자는 약 40명이므로 여러 측면에서 활발했다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 벽화에 나타난 악기와 연주형태 및 무용을 총체적으로 정리한 점으로 봤을 때는 북한의 연구성과가 소량이긴 하나 알찬 점이 있다. 지금까지의 연구 경향을 바탕으로 앞으로의 연구 과제를 제시하면, 첫째는 고구려 고분벽화에 있어서 음악학계에서 주로 관심가진 문제는 주악상의 악기가 무엇인가? 또는 그 악기의 명칭은 무엇이 바람직한가에 집중되었다고 볼 수 있다. 1차적으로 악기 판독이 가장 기초적이고 중요한 사안이지만, 벽화에 그려진 연주의 의미를 찾는 연구도 병행되어야 한다고 생각한다. 따라서 고분벽화에 그려진 주악상은 고구려인의 종교와 의식세계를 밝히는데 중요한 실마리가 되기 때문에 주악상의 의미에 대한 연구는 앞으로 해결해야 할 과제라고 생각한다. 둘째는 새로운 자료의 발굴과 기존 자료를 집대성하는 작업이 요청된다. 1차자료가 절대적으로 부족한 고구려 음악 연구에 있어서 새로운 자료의 발굴과 소개가 꾸준히 지속되어야 할 것이며, 아울러 기왕에 소개된 자료도 한 곳에 집약되지 않아 연구함에 있어서 불편을 감수해야 하는데, 이를 해결하기 위해서 고구려 음악 관련 문헌자료를 한 곳에 모으는 작업이나 고구려 고분벽화 가운데 악무에 관한 도상자료를 한 곳에 모으는 작업 등이 필요하다. 또한 고구려 음악 관련 연구 논문선집도 기대해 볼 만 하다. 이와 같은 자료의 집대성은 후속 연구를 위해 매우 중요한 기초 작업이다. 셋째는 최근 연구 경향에서 미술사학과 역사학 및 타 분야의 연구성과가 고구려 음악 연구의 지평을 넓혀가고 있다. 따라서 인접 학문 분야의 연구성과를 적극적으로 활용하여 고구려라고 하는 사회문화 속에서 음악문화를 해석하려는 노력이 필요하다는 제안을 해 본다.
