I reviewed newspaper or magazine articles of North Korea after the 1990s on Arirang to find their understanding and way of recognition for this paper. Through this research it was possible to confirm that there exist some common or different opinions about Arirang between scholars of South Korea and North Korea. Some common points between the South and North Korea are as below. First, the musical identity of songs categorized Ariang is found in the refrain part. Second, the opinions about the origin of Arirang or etymological interpretation Third, the fact that diverse kinds of local Ariang exist across the Korean peninsula. Fourth, the period of extensive development of Ariang from the end of 19th century to the early 20th century. Fifth, choosing Arirang, the theme song of movie, as the representative piece of today’s Arirang Nevertheless, some differences between South and North Korea are revealed in the plot of tales for the origin and evolution of Arirang, the time of Arirang’s origin, and the titles of the songs classified as Arirang category and their local relations Majority of tales quoted in North Korea to explain the origin of Arirang deals with the lamenting love stories of couple from low class deprived by the rich higher class, whereas such kind of tale has never been discussed in South Korea. Unlike the consensus that Arirang was originated in Gangwon province in North Korea, the common understanding in North Korea says that Arirang was derived from Hwanghae province, a part of North Korean territory. The north Korea even set the time of origin for Arirang as early as the beginning of Choseon dynasty or Goryeo kingdom or even 2000 years ago. Different titles are used for the identical Arirang pieces as follows. Further study should be carried out to find more about the origin and transmission of Arirang and the possibility of sharing the same title for the identical songs. To this end, comparative research on the Arirang study by both South and North Korea including most recent musicological accomplishments will be necessary.

이 글에서는 1990년대 이후 북한의 신문․잡지에 수록된 아리랑 관련 글을 통하여 북한 사회나 북한 학자들의 아리랑에 대한 이해와 인식 태도 등을 살펴보았다. 이를 통하여 아리랑을 바라보는 남과 북의 생각에는 같은 점과 다른 점이 엄연히 존재함을 확인하였다. 남북 사이에 큰 이견이 존재하지 않는 부분은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아리랑계 악곡이 지니는 정체성을 후렴구에서 찾는 점둘째, 아리랑 연구 초기에 제시되었던 아리랑의 유래나 어원 해석셋째, 우리나라 여러 지역에 지역성을 반영한 다양한 아리랑이 존재한다는 점넷째, 아리랑계 악곡의 광범위한 확산 시기를 19세기 말~20세기 초로 보는 점다섯째, 오늘날 아리랑을 대표하는 악곡으로 영화주제가 <아리랑>을 꼽고 있는 점그러나 아리랑의 유래나 발생을 설명하는 과정에서 인용되는 설화의 내용, 아리랑의 발생 시점, 몇몇 아리랑계 악곡의 곡명과 지역적 연관성 등에서 남북 간의 이견이 드러났다. 북한지역에서 아리랑의 유래를 설명하기 위하여 인용되는 설화 중에는 부유한 지배계층에게 착취당하는 순박한 기층민중의 애절한 사랑 이야기가 많은데, 이러한 이야기는 남한에서는 거의 논의되지 않는 것이다. 또한 남한에서는 아리랑이 강원도지방에서 비롯된 것으로 이해하지만, 북한에서는 지금 북한 땅인 황해도지방에서 발생한 것으로 주장하고 있으며, 그 시점을 조선 전기나 고려시대 또는 2000년 전으로 보는 견해도 있다. 그리고 동일한 악곡이지만 남북한에서 서로 다른 이름으로 불리는 곡명은 다음과 같다. 이 중 아리랑의 발생과 전승의 문제, 서로 다른 곡명의 통일 가능성 등은 보다 충실한 연구가 필요하다. 이와 관련하여 북한의 최근 음악학 연구결과와 남측의 견해를 비교․검토하는 등 추후의 활발한 논의가 필요하다.
