This study is aimed at investigating into the Joseon Music studies conducted by Japanese in 1930s, focusing on An Exposition of Court Musical Instruments of Joseon and A Photo Album of Court Musical Instruments of Joseon, published in 1935. Compiled by Yamada Sanae, the two books were compiled into one and reprinted with a title, An Exposition of Court Musical Instruments of Joseon. However, this reprint appears to have quite a few misdescription and intentional changes of the titles of photographs, not to mention of the simple mistakes. Thus, I have examined the original copies in the author's own handwriting, which are owned by Seoul National University Library. An Exposition of Court Musical Instruments of Joseon consists of general observations, 67 kinds of musical instruments including 6 kinds of dance materials, and epilogue. This book has three characteristics:First, the author quoted Joseon literature. Second, the author described instruments by his own observations. Third, the author compared the Joseon Musical instruments to the Japanese ones. A Photo Album of Court Musical Instruments of Joseon contains the scenes of performances in Joseon Shrine, 57 kinds of musical instruments, and 6 kinds of dance materials in 44 photographs. The performances in Joseon Shrine appear to be of the court ritual music and banquet music in regular scheduled rituals commenced from 1926, considering the musical instruments shown in the photographs. The 43 photographs of musical instruments are presumed not to have been taken by the author himself but provided by Yiwangjik Aakbu(The Conservatory of the Yi Royal Family). One of the characteristics of this photo album is that the photos of string instruments are taken both from the front and back, and compared to the similar Japanese instruments. It is also a distinctive characteristic that it contains the photographs of dance materials as well as those of musical instruments, unlike other photo albums of the time.

본 연구는 1930년대 일본인에 의해서 수행된 조선음악 연구에 대해서 살펴보는 것이다. 고찰 대상은 1935년에 야마다 사나에가 저술한 『조선아악기해설』과 『조선아악기사진첩』이다. 『조선아악기해설󰡕과 『조선아악기사진첩』은 1999년에 하나로 합쳐져 『조선아악기해설』 이라는 이름으로 복각되었다. 하지만 복각본은 원본과는 달리 오기가 적지 않고, 단순 실수에 의한 오류 외에도 의도적으로 사진의 명칭을 바꾼 흔적도 발견된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 복각본은 제외하고, 저자의 친필로 작성된 원본(서울대학교 도서관 소장본)을 사용했다. 『조선아악기해설』은 ｢개설｣에 이어 67종의 악기 항목(무구 6종 포함), 그리고 후기로 구성되어 있다. 이 책의 특징은 크게 세 측면으로 볼 수 있는데, 조선 문헌의 인용, 저자 자신의 관찰에 의한 기술, 일본악기와의 비교 측면이다. 첫째는 당시 이왕직아악사장이었던 함화진이 저술한 『조선악기편』을 발췌, 요약하고 있는 측면이고, 둘째는 조선악기에 익숙하지 않은 입장에서 면밀한 관찰과 체험을 통해 그 특징을 자세히 서술하고 있는 점이며, 셋째는 일본악기와의 비교를 통해 동양악기의 공통점을 찾으려는 점인데, 이 세 측면이 잘 조합되어 균형있는 내용으로 만들어졌다. 『조선아악기사진첩』에는 조선신궁에서의 연주 장면, 57종의 악기, 6종의 무구가 총 44장의 사진 등이 수록되어 있다. 이 중 조선신궁에서의 연주 장면은 1926년부터 시작된 정기 예제(禮祭)의 모습으로 생각되고, 사진 속 악기 구성으로 보아 이때 연주된 음악은 제례악 및 연례악이었던 것으로 보인다. 악기 사진 43장은 저자가 개인적으로 찍은 것이 아니라 이왕직아악부에서 제공한 것으로 추정된다. 이 사진첩의 특징 중 하나는 현악기의 사진을 앞면과 뒷면 모두 찍고 있다는 점과 조선악기와 유사한 일본악기 사진을 수록하고 있는 점이다. 악기 외에 무구의 사진을 싣고 있는 점도 당시의 다른 사진자료집과는 구분되는 특징이라고 하겠다.
