Korea and China have a five thousand-year history and culture. As much as so, these countries have a number of folk songs that were popular in each period of time. The representative folk songs of Korea and China, however, are Arirang and Molihua respectively. Although the times of formation and backgrounds are different, the two folk songs connote various meanings far more than simply as representative folk songs of the countries. In particular, the two folk songs share a common ground. The status of the two folk songs is so high that these songs can represent their respective countries. If so, a question is raised as to when, how and through which opportunities Arirang and Molihua grew into representative folk songs of the two countries. This is because, while numerous folk songs were created in the long histories of Korea and China, it leads us to wonder how and why the two songs in particular became selected as the countries' representative folk songs. With this question in mind, we intended to discuss the development processes of Arirang and Molihua briefly and then the people's awareness of and changes in the two folk songs over time. Through this basic process, it is aimed at deducing the opportunities and social backgrounds with which Arirang and Molihua emerged as national symbols and grew into the most important folk songs of the countries.

한국과 중국은 5천년의 유구한 역사와 문화를 가지고 있으므로 각 시대 상황에 맞게 유행한 민요가 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 양국의 대표적인 민요이라 하면 두말할 것 없이 아리랑과 모리화를 떠오르게 한다. 비록 이들의 형성시기와 배경은 서로 다르지만, 이미 단순한 민요의 한계를 넘어 많은 의미를 내포하고 있다는 것은 두말할 필요가 없다. 특히, 자국을 대표할 수 있을 만큼 그 위상이 매우 높다는 것에서 이 두 민요의 공통점을 발견할 수 있다. 그렇다면, 아리랑과 모리화는 언제, 어떻게, 어떠한 계기로 인하여 민족의 대표민요로 성장하게 되었는지에 대하여 의문이 제기된다. 왜냐하면 양국 모두는 오랜 역사 속에서 수없이 많은 민요가 창작되었고, 수많은 민요들 중에서 왜 하필이면 아리랑과 모리화가 선택받게 되었는지 궁금증이 생기게 된다. 이러한 의문점을 가지고 본고에서는 먼저 아리랑과 모리화의 발전과정을 간단하게 살펴본 후, 이에 대한 인식과 변화를 고찰하려 한다. 이러한 기초 작업을 통해 아리랑과 모리화가 한 나라의 민족적 상징으로 부상하게 된 점, 그리고 한 나라의 대표민요로 중요시되면서 성장하게 된 계기와 사회적 배경을 추리해보려 한다.
