This study set out to investigate the unified student strike(1924) at Yeongmyeong Girls' School, a Protestant girls' school in Gongju, through The Unified Student Strike of Single Ladies(1926) published serially in Maeilshinbo. In February, 1924, the students of Yeongmyeong Girls' School demanded that the foreign missionary headmaster should be replaced, that the school facilities should be expanded, and that competent teachers should be recruited. It was a phenomenon often observed in other cases of unified student strike. The students' dissatisfaction with the headmaster that was a foreigner can be, in particular, understood as part of the anti-missionary movement. The unified student strike at Yeongmyeong Girls' School stemmed from the conflicts between the headmaster and teachers and among the teachers as well as the frictions between the school and the students. It is noteworthy that the students demanded that the school should reinstate certain teachers that had been dismissed. The Unified Student Strike of Single Ladies offers some hints at the complicated circumstances of the event. It is, of course, early to conclude that its stories tell only the truth since it was written in a one-sided and biased viewpoint. It is, however, safe to admit that there were various forms of discord between the school and the students, between the headmaster and teachers, among the teachers, and between the mission and the teachers and students. The present study holds its significance in four aspects: first, a series with novel elements can be used as a research materials in the reality where there is a shortage of researches on the unified student strikes of certain schools; second, the unified student strike of Yeongmyeong Girls' School was no special case and displayed similar nature to the frequent unified student strikes of Protestant schools in the 1920s and 1930s, but it is significant in that it represents those unified student strikes as the best model; third, it is also significant that the present study conducted in-depth research on the unified student strikes of Protestant schools including girls' schools even though the research scope was limited to Yeongmyeong Girls' School; and finally, the study raised a need to focus on teachers in researches on students' movements including unified student strikes. Research efforts to investigate the nature of "teachers" in students' movements including unified student strikes will help to raise the level of research in the field in the future.

이 논문은 『每日申報』에 연재된 「處女들의 同盟休學」(1926)을 통해개신교계 여학교인 공주 영명여학교 동맹휴학(1924)에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 1924년 2월 영명여학교 학생들은 선교사인 외국인 교장의 교체와 함께 시설의 확충과 유능한 교사의 초빙을 요구했다. 외국인 교장에 대한불만은 반선교사운동의 연장선상으로도 이해할 수 있으며, 이는 개신교계 사립학교 동맹휴학에서는 최초의 사례이며, 반선교사운동의 연장선상으로도 이해할 수 있다. 이 여학교의 동맹휴학은, 학교와 학생들 사이의 마찰이었을 뿐 아니라교장과 교사, 교사와 교사 사이의 갈등이기도 했다. 학교 당국이 해임한특정 교사의 복직을 학생들 요청한 점은 주목할 만하다. 그리고 그 복잡한 사정의 일단을 「同盟休學」을 통해 짐작할 수 있었다. 물론 「同盟休學 」은 일방적·편파적인 시각에서 쓰여졌기 때문에 그 내용이 곧 사실이라고 단정하기는 이르다. 하지만 학교 당국과 학생, 교장과 교사, 교사와 교사, 그리고 선교부와 교사·학생 사이의 다양한 알력이 있었던 점은 인정해도 좋을 것이다. 이 논문의 의미는 첫째, 특정 학교의 동맹휴학에 대한 연구가 많지 않은 현실에서 소설적 요소가 가미된 연재도 연구의 자료로써 활용될 수있다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 영명여학교 동맹휴학은 특수한 사례가 아니며 1920~1930년대 빈발했던 개신교계 학교 동맹휴학과 그 성격이 거의 비슷하다. 하지만 그 모습을 가장 전형적으로 보여준다는 점에서 의미가 있을 것 같다. 셋째, 영명여학교의 사례에 국한되었지만, 여학교를 포함한 개신교계 학교의 동맹휴학을 심층적으로 연구할 수 있는계기가 되었다는 점에서도 의미를 부여하고 싶다. 넷째, 동맹휴학을 비롯한 학생운동 연구에서 ‘교사(敎師)’에 주목할 필요성이 제기되었다. 동맹휴학을 비롯한 학생운동에서 ‘교사’는 과연 어떤 존재였는가를 밝히는것은 향후 이 분야 연구의 수준을 한층 높일 수 있는 과제가 될 것이다.
