This research is a historical overview of Korean music scholarship, hanguk eumakhak, especially focusing on its development outside of Korea. By looking at the materials written by a Western scholar, Robert Provine, this paper scrutinizes the key aspects in the development and new phases of the scholarship. Also, the ideas of research is in relation to the Korean traditional music scholarship, so called “gugakhak,” discussing both scholarships in the context of their history. Provine devoted himself in the study of Korean traditional music for more than forty years as a scholar, editor, researcher, educator, and administrator. His achievements are shown in various areas, including publications, translations, and academic associations. The first appearance of Provine in the field of gugakhak in 1970s showed a possibility of future establishment of the scholarship overseas. His publications in 1980s made contribution in introducing earlier paradigm of Korean music research to foreign scholars, while at the same time adding materials to the body of bibliographical or Western writings in Korean traditional music. In the mid 1990s, he led membership in the Association of Korean Music Research as a president. He built network among the scholars worldwide by publishing newspaper, opening website, and organizing meeting. This made it possible for the scholars to communicate and to collaborate with, producing noticeable outcomes, such as Korean music section in Garland Encyclopedia of World Music series. These steps were in some ways deeply related to gugakhak in Korea, while at the same time generating issues of arguments. Scholars in Korean musicology, ethnomusicology as well as East Asian studies can understand some historical contexts and scholarly development of Korean traditional music through Provine-involved publications and activities. Korean music scholarship established and developed outside of Korea is not always away from gugakhak. Instead, they are related, mutually interacting and sometimes independently processing. This is an aspect on and a way of the expansion of Korean music scholarship overseas.

이 글은 1960년대 말부터 최근까지 활동하고 있는 미국인 음악학자 로버트 프로바인의 연구물과 학술활동의 내용을 살펴보고 이러한 자료들이 해외에서 이루어진 국악과 관련된 학문, 즉 한국음악학의 발전과 성립 과정에서 어떠한 의미로 이해될 수 있는 지에 대해서 논의하고자 한다. 본 연구는 프로바인의 연구방향, 출판물, 주도적 활동을 통해서 해외 한국음악학이 전개된 양상과 그 내재된 의미를 국악사학의 맥락 속에서 상호 연관성을 찾아내어 이해하는 데에 목적이 있다. 생존해서 활동하고 있는 학자의 연구물을 다룬다는 점이 여러 견해의 차이와 시기적인 문제점을 야기할 수도 있기에, 프로바인의 인생사나 공로를 부각하는 관점에서 논지를 펼치기보다는 해외 한국음악학의 전개과정을 국악학 전체의 역사적 맥락 속의 일부분으로 연관 지어보는 데에 중점을 두었다. 프로바인이 한국에서 연구를 시작할 당시는 해외에서의 한국음악 연구는 학문으로의 성립이 되지 않은 상황이었다. 그러나 그의 등장은 국제성이라는 새로운 인식이 싹트고 있는 1970년대 국악학계에 나타난 미래 해외 학문 활동을 위한 인력의 확보라는 점에서, 이 시기를 해외 한국음악학 성립의 배경과 가능성이 나타나는 시점으로 정의할 수 있다. 1980년대 프로바인의 영문 단행본과 번역서는 국악을 한국음악학이라는 학문으로 해외에 알리고 발전시키고자 한 프로바인의 목적의식에 큰 의미를 두어야 하며, 동시에 이 시기는 해외 한국음악의 자료 접근성 향상과 참고자료의 초기 기반이 확립되는 시점이다. 프로바인이 한국음악연구회(AKMR) 회장으로 재임한 1996년부터는 해외 한국음악학의 발전에 가속도가 붙은 활성화 단계였고, 이 시기는 국내의 연구전형이 해외 한국음악학계로 답습되고 반영되었다기보다는 해외 학자들의 주도하에 발전된 새로운 연구 분야가 있음이 분명해 진다. 2000년대에 들어서 갈런드 세계음악 백과사전에 한국음악편이 실리게 되면서 해외에서의 한국음악학 입지가 민족음악학계에서도 관심을 받는 학술적 영역의 하나로 확립되기 시작하는데, 이 당시의 해외 한국음악학의 성장은 국내 국악학계와의 긴밀한 관계나 의존이 아니라 해외학자들의 독자적 행보와 모임이 주가 되었다고 하겠다. 프로바인의 연구와 활동을 통해서 살펴본 해외 한국음악학의 성립과 발전과정은 그 시기별로 뚜렷한 전개 양상과 변화의 단계가 있었으며 이것은 국악학계와도 연관되어 있었다. 한국음악학의 발전과 전개가 국내와 해외라는 이분법으로 구분되기보다는 국악학의 발전 맥락 속에서 학문과 학자 간의 상호관계를 보여주며 이루어졌다고 하겠다.
