This study is a comparative analysis of photos and pictures of 'love' collected by the primary and sixth graders. A variety of basic studies on development of children’s picture expression over a long period of time have made it possible to find meaningful information to understand children’s artistic development. This information from various research on children’s picture provide adults including art educators to understand the developmental characteristics of children’s drawing and this information has been systematized and used for teaching them effectively. However, although the age is changing and the expression medium used by children is becoming increasingly diversified and digitalized, basic research on the expression of children using this new expression medium is still not conducted actively. Therefore, this study intends to explore the expressive characteristics of children using the digital media, which are most easily used in their everyday life. To do this, we examine how children's photography expressions have different characteristics from their drawing expressions, and how the characteristics of photography expressions differ among children of different ages. The results of this study analyzing children's pictures and photos on the theme of ‘love’ show that each grade school children use different approaches in painting and photography to express the same subject, and there is also qualitative differences between expressions in photographs of first grader’s and those of sixth grade children. This study emphasizes the necessity of more basic researches on photographic media based on the significance of the research results.

그림 표현 발달에 대한 장기간 동안 이루어져온 다양한 기초 연구들은 아동의 표현발달 특성을 이해할 수 있는 다양한 정보를 발견할 수 있도록 해주었으며, 이런 정보들은 체계화되어 지금까지도 아동을 지도하는 데 큰 도움을 주고 있다. 하지만 시대가 바뀌어 아동이 사용하는 표현매체가 점차 다양화되고 디지털화되고 있음에도 불구하고, 이런 새로운 표현매체를 활용한 아동의 표현에 대한 기초연구는 여전히 부족한 현실이다. 따라서 본 연구는 새로운 디지털 표현매체 중 아동들이 현재 가장 쉽게 일상에서 사용하고 있는 사진매체를 활용한 아동의 표현 특성을 본격적으로 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법으로는 기호학적 분석을 바탕으로 아동으로부터 수집한 시각자료들이 어떤 의미들을 내포하고 있는 지 탐구하였는데 아동의 시각적 표현물을 질적 자료로 보고 질적 분석을 시도하였다. 아동의 사진표현이 그림표현과 어떤 다른 특성을 가지고 있는 지, 그리고 사진표현특성은 연령대가 다른 아동 집단 사이에 어떻게 나타나고 있는 지 분석한 결과 각 학년군 아동들이 동일한 주제를 표현함에 있어 그림과 사진에서 다른 접근을 사용하고 있음을 그리고 1학년과 6학년 아동들의 사진표현에도 질적 차이가 존재하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
