The echo-generation, also called millennials, refers to a generation that has given up on employment, marriage, and childbirth. The greatest factors delaying marriage for this generation are unemployment and an increase in living expenses. Even those who have a loved one put off marriage due to dissatisfaction about the present and hopelessness about the future. How can the Church and theological thinkers approach this issue? This study observes the phenomena on non-marriage, late-marriage, and the increase in single-person households, while examining marriage based on three theological models: (1) the modern, secular definition of marriage based on the Enlightenment's concept of ‘marriage as a contract', (2) the Catholic tradition of marriage as ‘a scared ceremony’, and (3) the Protestant reformers’ explanation of ‘marriage as a covenant'. Based on these three theological marriage models, this study explores ways that the Church might apply these models in a balanced manner to the echo-generation, and proposes the following conclusions. First, through the model of ‘marriage as a contract’, the church can help the echo- generation understand the process of being a ‘conscious single’. The church must help millennials to prepare to live a balanced Christian, theologically-based lifestyle, regardless of their independent and responsible decision to remain single or married. Second, through the model of marriage as a sacred ceremony, the church must prepare a wedding ceremony with holiness that is approachable by the echo-generation. Marriage itself is not a means to receive God's grace, but the church must provide a ceremony that embodies both worldly and spiritual aspects to help couples experience holy union. Third, through the model of ‘marriage as a covenant’, the church should assist millennials in learning how to build love and intimacy. In this way, a new culture of marriage would be created on the foundation of the calling of and covenant with God.

에코 세대는 취업과 결혼과 출산을 포기한 일명 3포(三抛) 세대라 불린다. 이들이 결혼을 미루는 것은 현재의 취업난과 주거비용의 상승, 경제적 불안정이 가장 큰 요인이다. 이 세대는 현재에 대한 불만과 미래에 대한 암울함이 사랑하는 사람이 있어도 결혼을 미루어야 하는 삶을 살아가고 있다. 이에 대해 교회는, 신학은 어떻게 다가갈 수 있을까? 본 연구에서는 비혼과 만혼, 1인가구 증가의 사회적 현상을 관찰하고, 계몽주의의 ‘계약으로서의 결혼’에 기초한 현대의 세속적 결혼신학, 가톨릭 전통의 성례로서의 결혼, 그리고 종교개혁자들과 개신교의 ‘언약으로서의 결혼’을 살펴보았다. 이러한 세 가지 결혼모델로부터 교회에서 다음 세대에게 균형있게 적용할 수 있는 방안을 모색하였고 그 제안은 다음과 같다. 첫째는 계약으로서의 결혼모델을 통해 “의식있는 비혼” (conscious single)의 과정을 준비하도록 돕는다. 준비된 비혼으로서 혼자 살던지 결혼을 하던지 책임있고 자발적인 선택을 하되 교회는 신앙적이고 신학적인 균형을 이루도록 도와야 한다. 둘째는 성례로서의 결혼모델을 통해 다음 세대에게 다가갈 수 있는 거룩함으로의 결혼예식을 교회가 준비해야 한다. 결혼 자체가 하나님의 은총을 받는 수단은 아니지만 성스러움을 경험하고 신비함으로 부부가 연합할 수 있는 인간성과 영성이 어우러진 예식을 제공해야한다. 셋째는 소명과 언약으로서의 결혼모델을 통해 교회는 젊은 세대가 사랑과 친밀감을 어떻게 형성하는지를 배우도록 도와야 한다.
