This thesis is designed to bring light on the aspects of the modern Korean poetry by examining the influences that the French symbolism has on Kim Jong-sam’s poetics. While there exist virtually no related studies, even the few available settle for understanding Kim Jong-sam’s poetry as belonging to the symbolism in the Korean poetry. This is because people overlook the independence of Kim’s poetry by limiting it to Modernism. Kim’s poetry is not limited to the modernity of Korean poetry but demonstrates its unique quality. In pursuit of ‘easy poetry writing’, Kim’s poetics conveys the French Symbolist poetry in ‘the esthetics of displeasure’ and ‘the ethical consciousness of indignation’. It comprises ‘the esthetics of rebellion’ by Baudelaire, ‘the intellectual projection’ and ‘the spiritual politics’ by Valérie, and ‘honesty’ by Mallarmé. In the wake of the national liberation and partition and the war, French Symbolism was a crucial element of the interior and deep structure of Kim Jong-sam’s poetry. On this basis, Kim Jong-sam’s musical technique is influenced by the musical mysteriousness and sanctity, which serve as the principles for Mallarmé’s poetic creation. Kim’s phenomenology of spirit is deeply connected to the sensational depth of poetry as suggested by Valérie. And Kim’s modern sensibility is demonstrated in his attempt to copy the pursuit of interiority found in Baudelaire’s poetry. Ultimately, the bidirectional relationship between Kim Jong-sam’s poetics and French Symbolist poetry can shed light on previously unrevealed aspects of the modern Korean poetry after the war.

본고는 김종삼의 시작법과 프랑스 상징주의와 영향관계를 고구함으로써 한국 현대시의 양상을 새롭게 조명하는데 목적을 두었다. 이와 관련된 기존논의는 전무한 가운데 김종삼의 시를 한국 시단의 상징주의의 계보로 이해하려는데 그치고 있다. 이는 김종삼의 시성을 모더니즘 속에 한정함으로써 독자성을 오히려 간과하고 있다. 김종삼의 시성은 한국시의 근대성에 한정되지 않고 개성적 시학을 확보하고 있기 때문이다. 김종삼의 시작법은 ‘쉬운 시 쓰기’를 추구하며 ‘불쾌함의 미학’과 ‘노여움의 윤리의식’속에 프랑스 상징주의 시학을 담았다. 보들레르의 ‘반항의 미학’, 발레리의 ‘지적 투시화법’과 ‘정신의 정치학’, 말라르메의 ‘정직함’이다. 해방과 분단, 전쟁 이후 프랑스 상징주의는 김종삼 시의 내면이나 심층을 구성하는 중요한 요소다. 이를 바탕으로 김종삼의 음악적 기법은 말라르메의 시창작 원리인 음악의 신비로움과 성스러움에 영향을 받는다. 김종삼의 시의식은 발레리가 주장하는 시의 감각적 깊이와 관련을 맺는다. 그리고 김종삼의 현대적 감각은 보들레르 시의 내면성 추구를 체득하려는 데서 드러난다. 궁극적으로 김종삼의 시작법과 프랑스 상징주의 시와의 양향관계는 전후 한국현대시의 새로운 면모를 이해하는 지점이기도 하다.
