Openness is one of the most important personal traits, which leads to individual’s achievement and happiness. But psychological theories and tests related to openness haven’t been studied enough. So this study was based on the five-factor model and positive psychology and also the similarities and differences between them were arranged. Throughout, the following were concluded. First, creativity, extroversion and emotional stability were related to openness of the five-factor model but with positive psychology, curiosity and creativity were closely connected with. Second, creativity and openness had a close relationship with each other. These findings can influence on individual’s challenge for its goal and comprehensive development. And subsequent studies of openness itself and openness improvement programs for each developmental stage or gender difference should be followed.

개방성은 열린 사고로 자신이 원하는 것을 찾고 얻어가는 삶의 과정에 필수적 인 성격 특징의 하나이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 개방성을 주요 변인으로 한 선행 연구가 거의 없어 개방성이 무엇이고 어떤 긍정적인 역할을 하는지 구체화되지 못하였다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구는 5요인 모델과 긍정심리학에서 말하는 개 방성에 대한 이론적 정의와 관련 심리검사를 기초로 두 이론에서 말하는 개방성 의 유사점과 차이점을 정리하였다. 연구 과정에서 5요인 모델의 개방성은 창의 성, 외향성, 정서적 안정성, 긍정심리학에서는 창의성 및 호기심과 관련이 있음 을 알아냈다. 또한 두 이론의 개방성 관련 성격 특징에 공통적으로 창의성이 있 음을 밝혀내고, 개방성과 창의성의 상호보완적인 관계를 탐색하였다. 마지막으 로, 개방성과 창의성은 모두 성취와 관계에 밑거름이 되어 개인의 행복과 상담의 기본 목표에 도움이 되는 자질임을 제시 하고, 후속 연구와 관련 프로그램 개발 필요성에 대해 제언하였다.
