The purpose of this study is to consider the characteristics of a playwriter, Tennessee Williams’ play, , becoming a movie in terms of differences between a play and movie as media. In fact, it is one of the earliest plays becoming a movie in the West. What is compared with the play here is the movie with the same title directed by Elia Kazan. He was also a producer of the play, . Although he was trying to make it into a movie faithfully to the original, he changed some of the crucial scenes according to the characteristics of movies as media. The scenes include the lead-in, where the boy collecting newspaper subscriptions appears, where the Mexican old lady appears, where Stanley rapes Blanche, and the ending. Because of the characteristics of media, when a play is turned into a movie, there are some parts needing modifications, for instance, omissions, transformations into visual images, or maximized visual effects.
