A flower is one of natural objects that is closely bound up with human life. Its cultural symbol and meaning are pretty important for mankind, and it has long affected mankind as a cultural archetype. A variety of cultural events that make use of flowers are under way, and these events are even used for commercial purposes. In our country, the symbol and meaning of flower were linked to the rise and fall of the nation through the process of personification, and some narrative works that utilized flowers were composed to give a king lesson. Thus, the nature of flower as a cultural archetype is moral and quite complicated. There are typical works to show this nature of flower:“ Hwawanggye,”“ Hwasa” and “Hwawangjeon.” Therefore understanding a flower as a cultural archetype is a little vague and not the same as understanding it from a commonsense point of view, because the way of giving meaning to it is generally associated with its floral language that originated from the west. Indeed, it seems necessary to pay attention to a flower as a cultural archetype, since that makes it possible to create diverse stories.

꽃은 우리들의 삶과 밀접하게 연관되어 있는 자연물이다. 따라서 인류에게 중요한 문화 적 상징과 의미를 내포하고 있으며, 이는 문화원형으로 현재까지 영향을 미치고 있다. 때 문에 꽃을 활용한 다양한 문화행사가 진행되고 있으며, 이는 산업적으로 이용되기까지 한다. 우리나라에서 꽃에 대한 상징과 의미는 의인화에 따른 국가의 흥망성쇠를 집약적으로 보 여주고 있다는 점에서 특징적이다. 이와 같은 방식으로 꽃을 활용한 서사작품은 교훈을 목적으로 창작되면서 폭넓은 공감을 전제로 하고 있다. 이 때문에 꽃에 대한 문화원형의 양상은 보다 복합적이면서 도덕적인 성격을 지닌다. 이러한 과정을 보여주는 작품으로는 「화왕계」, 「화사」, 「화왕전」 등이 대표적이다. 따라서 전통적으로 꽃을 이해하는 과정은 다소 막연하면서 상식적으로 꽃에 의미를 부여하는 오늘날과 다르다. 꽃에 대한 의미 부여의 과정이 서양에서 유래된 꽃말과 연계되어 있는 경우가 현재는 일반적이기 때문 이다. 이러한 점에서 우리의 꽃에 대한 문화원형은 다채로우면서도 현실 에 보다 직접적인 영향을 줄 수 있는 이야기를 만들어낼 수 있는 기반이 된다는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다.
