We can see clearly many differences between the truth of historical events and incidents of the present, and what we commonly know about them. Because distorted truths and wrong understandings not only don’t help our future but also damage the fundamental value that people have to persue qualities such as truth and justice, we must correct them. In a so-called ‘age of high technology’ and ‘age of science’, we receive a lot of information through various mediums, but do they report the truth? Do we judge correctly? Bertolt Brecht and Louis Pierre Althusser present artistic and philosophical directions with regard to these questions. If in every study and thought, people’s pursuits must have value, and if they must have the purpose of reflecting history and improving society, it is obvious that intellectuals and artists have certain obligations. In this paper, I considered a principle and function that social theater could have.

동서양을 막론하고 역사 속에 구현된 일련의 사실과 현재 일어나고 있 는 사건들은 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 것과 다름이 많다. 왜곡된 사실과 그 것을 통한 잘못된 인식은 우리의 발전적 미래에 전혀 도움이 되지 않을 뿐 아니라 인간이 추구해야 할 진리와 정의와 같은 근본적 가치를 훼손하 기 때문에 반드시 바로 잡아야 할 근거를 갖는다. 소위 기술시대, 첨단과학의 시대라 불리는 지금, 우리는 지금 무수히 많은 매체를 통한 정보의 홍수 속에서 살고 있다. 그러나 그 정보들은 진 실을 말하고 있는가? 많은 수용자들은 그것에 대해 올바른 판단을 할 수 있는가? 이와 같은 물음에 브레히트와 알튀세르의 이론은 예술적, 철학 적 방향을 제시한다. 모든 예술과 사상이 인간이 추구해야 할 가치, 그리고 역사에 대한 성찰과 사회 개선에 목적을 둔다면 지식인들이나 예술가들의 의무는 명백 하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 브레히트의 연극이론과 알튀세르의 호명이 론을 중심으로 무대예술로서의 사회극의 창작 원리와 사회적 기능에 대 해 고찰하였다.
