이 논문은 불교설화의 핵심적 조목 가운데 하나인「憬興遇聖」조목 을 대상으로 전승의 실상과 의의를 다룬 것이다. 이 조목에 대한 해석 은 각각 있었지만 보살신앙의 설화로 여러 층위가 있는 점을 착안하고 분석한 것은 이 논문에서 처음 시도한다. 특히 관음보살과 문수보살이 함께 등장하여 일정한 의미를 구성하 도록 갖춘 점이 이 글에서 돋보인다. 안의 시름과 사회적 기능에 대한 의문을 제기하면서 안의 병과 밖의 병을 다루는 점에 반드시 필요했던 것이 바로 보살이다. 보살을 만나서 크게 깨우치고는 사회적 의미를 확장하는 것이 이 조목의 의미라고 할 수가 있다. 이 논문에서 시야를 확대하여 전승 자체를 문제삼아 구비전승과 문 헌전승을 함께 비교하고 고찰하면서 동일한 보살설화가 각각 전승되 는 상호관계를 통해서 이야기의 역사와 전승의 관점을 드러내고자 하였다. 각각의 전승 은 말로, 글로 전승되면서 다양한 의미를 구성하며 각각의 맥락에 일정한 전승에 기여했음이 드러난다. 과거의 전통이 전 승을 통해서 구현되는 양상을 보여주면서 설화의 전통이 불교의 이치 를 구현하는 데 깊이 작용하였음을 살필 수 있는 조목이다.
