This paper is a review and historical research focusing on 갻the study of the anti-Japanese attitude of Poch'.n'gyo갽. Poch'.n'gyo had an anti-Japanese attitude. During the Japanese occupation of Korea, it was disbanded as part of systematic repression. What made Japan repress Poch'.n'gyo? Was it considered to be a cult, or did it pose a threat to Japanese colonial rule? Many records exist during the repression of Poch'.n'gyo which clearly stated, 갾Poch'.n'gyo gathered funds for the independence of Korea.갿 This research reviewed the status of the study of Poch'.n'gyo before and after the year 2000. Most research remarked on the anti-Japanese attitude of Poch'.n'gyo, and even its ethnicity. However, some recently announced papers denied Poch'.n'gyo갽s ethnicity. So, the biggest issue on the research of Poch'.n'gyo concerns how to look at the ethnicity of it. There is no debate about 갻the anti-Japanese attitude of Poch'.n'gyo갽. Related research from both time periods, as well as many materials left behind by Japan, indicated the anti-Japanese attitude of Poch'.n'gyo. The latter half of the paper explores the directions of future research with examples given. Especially, the events related to its anti- Japanese attitude were introduced in chronological order with detailed analysis. I, in the paper, express that these examples would inspire future research. One hundred years ago, 갻tradition갽 and 갻civilization갽 in Korea under Japanese rule was in a state of flux. The tradition at that time was closer to excluding the period of dynasty, rather than to keeping it. The media such as newspapers and journals considered Poch'.n'gyo as an object to be illuminated, but many people had interest in the Poch'.n'gyo movement. The people under Japanese occupation, who were treated as the objects to be illuminated, would have thought in a different way than people of today think. I hope further research will shed light upon this thought through the language of the participants of the Poch'.n'gyo movement.

이 글은 ‘보천교의 반일성’을 연구하기 위한 시론이자 연구사 정리다. 보천교는 기본적으로 반일성을 갖는다. 일제강점기에 보천교는 일제의 수많은 탄압을 받았 고 그 탄압으로 보천교는 해체되었다. 그렇다면 일제는 왜 보천교를 탄압했을까? 일제가 보천교를 사이비 종교라서 탄압하였을까? 아니면 식민통치에 위협이 되었 기 때문에 탄압하였을까? 일제가 보천교를 탄압하면서 남긴 수많은 자료에는 대 체로 다음과 같이 기록돼 있다. “보천교가 조선의 독립을 위해 자금을 모았다.” 이 글은 보천교의 연구 현황을 2000년을 기점으로, 그 이전과 이후로 나누어 서 살펴보았다. 대체의 관련 연구는 보천교의 반일성, 더 나아가 보천교의 민족성 까지 언급하였다. 하지만 근래에 보천교의 민족성을 부인하는 글이 발표되었다. 따라서 보천교 연구의 최대 쟁점은 ‘보천교의 민족성’을 어떻게 보아야 할 것인가 이다. 그렇다고 하더라도 ‘보천교의 반일성’에는 재고의 여지가 없다. 왜냐하면 지금까지의 관련 연구에서 뿐 아니라, 일제가 남긴 수많은 자료에서 보천교의 반 일성을 읽을 수 있기 때문이다. 이 글의 후반부에서는 향후의 관련 연구의 방향성을 ‘예시’와 함께 제시하였다. 특히 보천교의 반일성을 엿볼 수 있는 사건들을 시대 순으로 구성하면서, 그 특 징들도 함께 소개하였다. 이러한 예시가 향후의 관련 연구를 하는 데 있어서 참 신한 착안으로 이어졌으면 하는 바람도 피력하였다. 지금으로부터 100여 년 전의 식민지 한국은 ‘전통’과 ‘문명’이라는 명분이 혼 재돼 있었다. 당시의 전통이란 왕조시대에 지키고자 한 ‘정(正)’보다는 배척하고 자 한 ‘사(邪)’에 가까웠다. 신문이나 잡지 같은 언론에서는 문명의 저 편에 있는 것처럼 보이는 보천교를 계몽의 대상이라 하였지만, 당시에 적지 않은 민중은 보 천교운동에 관심을 보였다. 계몽의 대상으로 지목된 그들, 즉 민중들은 오늘날 우 리가 생각하는 방식대로 생각하지 않았을 것이다. 향후의 관련 연구는 보천교운 동에 참여한 그들의 언어로써 그들의 생각을 추적하는 작업이 되었으면 한다.
