Uiam Son Pyong-Hui(1861~1922) and George H. Mead(1863~1931), who commonly observed the great chaos of the world in politics and thoughts, and in their own way tried to find out a new practical vision for the new century, lived together at the begin of the 20th century in different continents, in East Asia and in US America. At the end of 19th century the world had been in the situation, in which industry and international trade explosively grew up in the industrialized countries, and competitions of economical development among such countries were so enormous that they unavoidably collided with each other in the military powers, and made barbarism and wars. It is common to both to criticise the human reason, in which had been trusted blindly since the period of enlightenment, but which had been used as instrument to dominate the other person and the nature. It is common also to develope a new movement in the academic world trying to interpretate the most certain old knowledge. Uiam was as leader of a new religion, Chondokyo, spiritually awakened through some times of 49 days long spiritual exercises and wrote Muchepubkyong(1911), a guide book to show people to become saint. Mead, as a pragmatist and a social psychologist, studied lifelong on human intelligent and mind, and as the result of his studies Mind, Self and Society(1934) was published by his pupils, in which his scriptures of lectures was collected. Uiam stressed two ways of selfcultivating in Muchepubkyong, one way to the nature of human being and the other to the body, different from than the traditional confucianism and buddhism. Because the mind is operating by entering of all rules and all things, which are outsides of me, society and practicing act are eventually considered very important. On the other hand, because Mead considers mind and self not as substance as in substantial philosophy and psychology, but as the thing which are produced and developed, society and practicing act are very important. This basis of thinking of both is in relation with the fact, that both philosophers devoted themselves to change the society in their real life. In this thesis, I will see the common things, in which Uiam took through meditation understandings on world, mind and self, and in which Mead analyzed them through scientific and pragmatic experiments, and then I will see the things, which can be supplement by each other. The both consider the mind of human being as the thing, which is brought out in the process of inner reactions or responses to the from the other or circumstances given stimulus, not as substance, which is itself subsistent and perfect. Therefore is the mind for them a kind of communicative process, which intermediate through senses of the body between the organism and the circumstances. The selfcultivating of Uiam, in which the body is important element, is compared with Mead`s philosophy, that man tries to reduce differences between "I" in the expressing of act and "me" in the organized set of attitudes of others, and to keep his own relationships between self-identifications, which are produced in many kinds of circumstances. Because of that the identity of a person can be kept and developed. The stressing of the interactive relation of the both connecting between mind, self and society not just show us eventually the importance of practice and act, but also give the reason, why we must develope a good society influencing on mind and self of the individuals. Mead tried to explain the humanity scientifically without depending upon the traditional viewpoint about human mind and self, like substantialism and mythism, while Uiam took the traditional viewpoint of the human nature and mind in Neoconfucianism and Buddhism, but insisted newly the chigi-monistic realism, that the inner and the outer is one, what the teaching of Su-un, tong-kwi-il-cheis(all things return to the One, is fully developed.
