This thesis examines characteristics from intellectual history focusing on Yesan area among Naepo area in Chungcheongnam-do from an anthropogeographical perspective and on Joseon Dynasty in a temporal context. Yesan, which lies east in Naepo area, is a point where ‘Naepo’ originated and one of core districts in Naepo. To extract the spirit of Yesan area from the name of Yesan, it can be summarized as ‘Jeolmun’ which means ‘the most ideal and shining status in a given circumstance.’ In other words, ‘the most brilliant status with the supreme good being practiced in every situation’ is where ‘the proprieties(禮)’ are fulfilled. This article investigates Yesan’s Jeolmun spirit which has been continuously handed down with the spirit of a livelihood politician Pojeo Jo-ik, ‘liberty’ idea from the family of Hyehwan Yi Yong-hyu, the main family of Seong ho Left and Chusa Kim Jeong-hee, the greatest of Joseon glocal for a representative example where this regional spirit is well attained during the Joseon Dynasty. This ‘Jeolmun spirit’ continued as dedication for restoring national rights when the sovereignty was lost in late Joseon, which subsequently produced a number of patriotic martyrs including Yun Bong-gil and Kim Han-jong. Park In-ho, a Donghak Movement activist and the 4th leader in Cheondogyo, was another example of that current as well.

이 논문은 인문지리학적 관점에서 충남의 내포지역 중에서도 예산지역을 중심으로, 그리고 시기적으로는 조선시대를 중심으로, 지역적 정신의 형성과정을 고찰하였다. 내포 중에서도 동쪽을 차지하는 예산지역은 ‘내포’가 유래된 지점으로 핵심 내포지역의 하나이고 사통팔달의 교통여건 덕분에 지방임에도 불구하고 항시 중앙정치나 국가생활 전반에 대한 인식과 참여도가 높았다. 게다가 ‘상황마다 최고선(最高善)을 실천하여 가장 빛나는 상태’인 ‘절문(節文)’ 정신을 지명으로 하는 예산(禮山)에는 이러한 정신에 걸맞은 인물들이 많이 배출되었고, 반대로 이러한 절문정신의 실천자들의 영향으로 후손들 역시 근대까지 이를 실천해왔다고 하겠다. 이글에서는 그 대표적인 예를 17세기 포저(浦渚) 조익(趙翼)의 균등을 추구하는 ‘민생정치’ 정신, 18세기 성호좌파 혜환(惠寰) 이용휴(李用休) 일가의 ‘자유’ 사상, 19세기 전반 추사(秋史) 김정희(金正喜)의 글로컬 정신 등으로 면면히 계승되어 온 점을 살펴보았다. 이러한 ‘절문정신’의 전통이 있었기에 19세기 말-20세기 초 국권을 강탈당하는 상황을 만났을 때 윤봉길, 김한종 등 많은 순국(殉國) 충절(忠節)들의 국권회복 노력이 가능했던 것이다. 물론 후일 천도교 제4세 대도주였던 박인호의 경우 역시 이러한 예산의 절문전통을 동학적으로 실천한 예라고도 해석할 수 있을 것이다.
