In this paper I present some arguments about the meaning of the ‘Chungsuh of Donghak-Cheondogyo from the ontological and ethical aspects. Especially I put more emphasis to the dialectic of the Sacred and the Mundane of the Chungsuh. The Chungsuh has a meaning of the religious and philosophical character, because there are both the immanent and transcendent senses in the Hanullim of Donghak. The Chungsuh has an ontological meaning, because there are the limited and the unlimited, the temporality and the eternity, and the object and the subject in the ontic character of the Water. The Chungsuh has a unique ontological meaning by the dialectic of the Sacrede and the Mundane. I have a suggestion of the dialectic of the Sacrede and the Mundane through G.W.F. Hegel’s dialectic, Mircea Eliade’s mythology and Joseph Campbell’s mythology and life. I want to stress that religious belief and asceticism of the Cheondo(天道) religion is based on the Chungsu, then the truth spiritual life of the Modern in 21 century was realized.

동학 천도교에서 청수는 오관중의 하나인 청수봉전을 통한 마음의 정화, 육체적 정신적 치유라고 하는 종교적 의미뿐만 아니라, 만물의 존재와 생성의 근원이라는 존재론적인 의미와 함께 청수를 통해서 표면에 머물러 있는 삶이 아니라 중심에서 사는 삶을 지향하는 실천철학적인 의미를 지닌다. 청수에 나타난 다양한 의미를 헤겔, 엘리아데, 캠벨과 같은 학자들의 방법론을 통해 규명하고자 하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 이를 위해 먼저 동학 천도교의 기본정신과 청수의 위치를 살펴보았다. 내유신령, 외유기화, 각지불이의 정신인 모실 侍자를 중심으로 조화정과 만사지의 기본 내용을 중심으로 천도교의 기본정신이 무엇인지 제시하고 청수의 위치를 규명하였다. 동학 천도교 경전에서 청수의 의미가 제시된 『해월신사법설』의 ｢천지이기｣편을 중심으로 청수의 철학적 의미를 엘리아데의 성과 속의 변증법을 통해서 제시했다. 또한 청수사상의 의미와 인간의 삶의 의미와 관련하여 논의했다. 특히 캠벨의 신화와 인생을 중심으로 철학적 신화적 의미로서 청수는 인간의 삶을 속된 삶에서 성스러운 영적인 삶으로 인도하는 종교적 상징임을 보여주고자 했다.
