This paper focuses on a possibility of communication between the East and the West by comparing and analyzing Soowoon and Haewall of Donghak with the philosophy of body and soul by Spinoza in the viewpoint of East-West Relationship. In the process this paper shows how much the creative thoughts of Donghak contain the universal values. It concludes that the potential of Donghak in the modern society is to develop Donghak as a new way of philosophy by revealing its rich value about life, awareness of itself as a modern entity and combining universal interests and individual life in an ecological standpoint.

이 논문은 동서교섭의 관점에서 동학의 수운과 해월 그리고 스피노자의 몸과 마음 이해를 집중 비교분석하고 동서 교섭의 소통 가능성과 동학의 독창적 사상이 얼마나 보편적인 가치를 내포하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 동학의 현대적 발전 가능성은 동학사상이 가지고 있는 풍부한 생명의 가치를 살려내면서 근대적 개체의 자각을 수용하여 보편적 공리(公理)와 개체의 생명을 생태론적 견지에서 결합시켜 새로운 방향으로 발전시키는 데 있다는 결론을 얻었다.
