Garden Design for Old Campus by Applying the Concept of Healing - focused on Courtyard of Dasom House in Seoul National University of Education -

The object of this study is to make a healing garden for stress caused from college life by regenerating run-down campus and to create a new space where college students can regain sound and healthy vitality. Seoul National University of Education is located in Seocho-gu, Seou. It moved to its current location in 1977. The study site is located in the south west side of the campus. It’s a narrow and long courtyard surrounded by buildings. The characteristics of garden design are summarized as follows. First, it consisted of a static and stable spaces that can heal the stresses in college life such as shadow garden(Sikyeungwon, 息影園), Chat garden(Damsowon, 談笑園) and Meditation garden(Myoungsangwon, 冥想園) which are passive spaces. Second, it consisted of various function spaces and facilities by introducing wood deck, maple yard and 200 stepping stones. Third, the new design utilizes excellent existing trees in the site in order to enhance the healing effect of natural scenery and complements natural elements such as mirror pond and molding stone wall.
