The aim of this article is to study the religious experiences of Hung and Choe in the viewpoint of brain-science. After the late 20th century the brain-science is developing fully with technical help (for example f.M.R.I. and PET-CT). With this modern medical equipments the brain-scientists will research the RSME(Religious, Spiritual, and/or Mystical Experiences) quantitatively. The materialistic researchers will interpret the RSME as the product of human brain. On the other hand the non-materialistic scholars don't agree with their opinion. They believe in a characteristic essence of RSME, that is just not a product of human brain. Hung and Choe founded the new religious movement respectively in China and Korea. For that each religious experience played the great role. But after the foundation of organizations were the process of each movement different, specially in the viewpoint of RSME. Hung and the Taiping used it mostly as the tools for the grip of power, whereas the great goal of Choe and the Donghak is to get true RSME. As a result of this difference the Taiping was destroyed thoroughly after the suicide of Hung. On the other hand the Donghak could survive after the execution of Choe, because they relatively concentrated more to get the true RSME.

이 글은 현대 뇌과학의 종교체험에 대한 연구 현황을 정리한 후, 그 관점을 가지고 홍수전과 최수운의 종교체험을 비교 고찰하는 것을 주목적으로 한다. 홍수전과 최수운 모두 19세기 말 중국과 한국에서 새로운 종교운동을 일으킨 지도자들이다. 그리고 이들의 종교운동에서 그들의 신비체험이 차지하는 비중은 지대하다. 1837년 홍수전의 종교체험은 태평천국 설립을 위한 토대가 되었고, 1860년에 있었던 수운의 종교체험 역시 동학 설립의 결정적 계기가 되었기 때문이다. 하지만 이들의 향후 전개상황은 차이가 있다. 홍수전의 경우 갈수록 정치권력 장악을 위한 목적으로 그의 종교체험과 환상을 이용한 반면, 최수운과 동학은 구도적, 즉 종교적 깨달음과 수행을 위한 본래의 목적을 쉽게 놓치지 않았다. 이런 점에서 홍수전에 비해 최수운은 보다 더 참된 RSME 유지에 충실했었다고 볼 수 있다. 이 결과로 태평천국은 홍수전의 사망과 더불어 역사 속에 흔적도 없이 사라졌지만, 수운과 동학은 1894년 동학운동이 진압당한 이후에도 살아남아 지금까지 이어지고 있다.
