Much result was accumulated for the study on the Donghak farmer forces(동학농민군) oppression by the Japanese military, Korea Central Command and the local military, Minbogun(민보군). And there are many studies about central figure of the Donghak farmer forces. However, the study on central figure in command of the military unit which oppressed the Donghak farmer forces is not almos it. Therefore, I choose four people in the central figures of the side that oppressed the Donghak farmer forces. And investigated their activity mainly on the Donghak farmer war. It is the purpose to research on the prosopography of the side that oppressed the Donghak farmer forces. Among central figures of the Japan side, in particular,　I focused　on　the activity about Kosiro Minami(南小西郞) who was the 19th battalion commander. He was the person who performed ‘the homicide light order(殺光命令)’ for the Donghak farmer forces of commissary general Soroku Kawakami(川上操六) in enhancement. For a person of the Korea side, Doohwang Lee(李斗璜), he participated in the oppression of the Dong hak farmer forces in captain of Jangwieyongbyung(長衛営兵官), Heeyeon Jo(趙羲淵), he became military authorities minister in September, 1894, and commanded all Korea forces, and Dojae Lee(李道宰), who was dispatched as of Jeollado Gwanchalsa(全羅道 觀察使), and commanded the oppression of the Donghak farmer forces as local government officials.

일본군, 조선 중앙군 및 지방군, 민보군 등에 의해 이루어진 동학농민군 탄압에 관한 연구는 많은 성과가 축적되어 왔으며 동학농민군의 주요인물 들에 관한 연구도 많은 부분 진행되어 왔다. 그러나 동학농민군 탄압부대를 지휘, 통솔한 주요인물에 대한 연구는 이루어지지 않은 것이 현상이다. 본고는 탄압 측의 주요인물을 선정하여 동학농민전쟁을 중심으로 그들의 전후 행적을 간단하게나마 조사하여 동학농민군을 탄압한 측의 인물연구에 그 목적을 두었다. 동학농민군을 탄압하였던 중심인물 가운데 일본군 측 인물로는 특히 “동학당 정토대(征討隊)”대장으로 조선에 파견되었던 독립후비보병 제19대대 대장 미나미 코시로(南小四郎)에 대해 살펴보았다. 그는 병참총감 가와카미 소로쿠(川上操六)의 “향후 동학당은 모두 죽이라”는 살광(殺光) 명령을 충실하게 실행한 인물이다. 조선 측 인물로는 중앙군 가운데 장위영병관으로 직접 농민군 탄압에 참여하였던 이두황, 1894년 9월에 군부대신이 되어 조선군의 총 지휘관 역할을 하였던 조희연, 그리고 전라도 관찰사로 파견되어 지방관으로 동학농민군 탄압을 지휘하였던 이도재를 그 대상으로 삼아, 동학농민전쟁을 전후한 그들의 행적을 살펴보았다.
