This study is to illuminate the dialectic of cognition and being in Donghak from the viewpoint of a practical discussion of peace and unification thought. Such illumination also enables to provide the underpinning of drawing an ideal type of political society. To understand dialectically the nature of the relation between knowing and living is to clarify the epistemological foundation of being, to urge the realization of a just society, and furthermore to come up with the theoretical soil to induce peace and unification. It is to accept the existence of all things, that is, the oneness of the totality of all things by realizing the organic nature of life and its interpenetration. The dialectical relation between cognition and being in Donghak can be condensed into the world of mansaji and mugeokdaedo. The reason why the essence of the Heavenly Way and the Heavenly Virtue ends in mansaji is that mansaji leads to true awareness and true life, and thus the world of mugeokdaedo would reveal itself. To know all things is to know that the whole process of creation and evolution of all things itself is the inner self-manifestation of the 'Ultimate Energy(至氣)' which is the true self in divine unity. The world of mugeokdaedo based on mansaji is the new world of hucheon-gaebyeok which corresponds to the Way of Heaven of the trinity of heaven, earth and all creation, and which is opened at the stage of gakjibuli. The dialectic of cognition and being in Donghak empathizes the awakening of spirituality of life which assumes fundamentality, inclusiveness, and universality, and begins with comprehending the fact that consciousness and system are interlinked with each other. Since the core task of life thought of Donghak rests on the organic unity of particularity and universality, regionalization and globalization, national state and world civil society, it shows ideological affinity with grass-roots democracy transcending duality. Now is the very time we should take initiative to create a new dimension of solidarity in order to contribute the settlement of East Asia and world peace with the unification of the Korean peninsula through understanding the importance of spiritual dimension of subsistence and strengthening an empathetic tie.

본 연구는 동학에 나타난 인식과 존재의 변증법을 평화와 통일사상의 실천적 논의라는 측면에서 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 이러한 변증법적 관계에 대한 고찰은 정치사회의 이상향을 도출해내는 근간이 되는 것이기도 하다. 앎과 삶의 관계적 본질을 변증법적으로 이해한다는 것은 존재의 인식론적 기초를 밝히는 것이고, 정의사회의 구현을 촉구하는 것이며, 나아가 평화와 통일을 추동해내는 사상적 토양을 마련하는 것이다. 말하자면 생명의 유기성과 상호 관통을 깨달아 만유의 존재성을 수용하는 것이다. 동학에 나타난 인식과 존재의 변증법적 관계는 ‘만사지’와 무극대도의 세계로 압축될 수 있다. 천도와 천덕의 진수가 ‘만사지’로 끝난 것은 만사를 알면 참인식이 일어나고 참삶이 전개되어 무극대도의 세계는 저절로 열리기 때문이다. 우주만물의 생성․변화․소멸 자체가 모두 참자아인 하늘의 조화 작용임을 아는 것이 곧 만사를 아는 것이다. ‘만사지’에 기초한 무극대도의 세계는 ‘각지불이’의 경계에서 열리는 천지가 합덕하는 후천개벽의 새 세상이다. ‘만사지’에 이르기 위해서는 ｢시천주｣의 자각적 주체로서 무위이화의 덕과 그 기운과 하나가 되는 삶을 살아야 한다. 동학의 인식과 존재의 변증법은 근원성․포괄성․보편성을 띠는 생명의 영성에 대한 자각을 강조하며, 의식과 제도가 하나의 고리로 연결되어 있다는 사실을 인식하는 것에서부터 시작한다. 동학의 생명사상은 특수성과 보편성, 지역화와 세계화, 국민국가와 세계시민사회의 유기적 통일성을 핵심 과제로 삼는 까닭에 일체의 이원성을 넘어선 풀뿌리 민주주의와 이념적 친화성을 갖는다. 이제 패러다임 전환이 촉구되면서 서구적 보편주의가 위협받는 문명의 대전환기에 생존의 영적 차원의 중요성을 인식하고 공감적 유대를 강화하여 한반도 통일과 더불어 동아시아와 세계의 평화 정착에 기여할 수 있도록 새로운 차원의 연대 조성에 앞장서야 할 것이다.
