이 글은 근대문학에 나타난 동학군 아내의 형상화 양상 및 그 의의에 대해 논한 것이다. 분석 대상은 희곡 <산돼지>, 동학소설 <동학군의안해>․<모란봉>, 동학전설 <독바우>, 동학민요 <새야새야 파랑새야>이다. 우선 이들 작품에서 동학군의 아내는 역적 남편을 두었다는 죄로 폭행과 능욕 등 수난을 당한다. 또한 전사한 동학군을 남편으로 둔 여성은 죽어가는 남편의 모습을 접하고 극도의 충격을 받거나 애도하는 모습으로 나타난다. 이러한 형상화는 동학농민혁명의 실패에 따른 비극성을 강화하는 효과가 있다. 다음으로 문학에 나타나는 동학군의 아내는 혁명 실패 후 남편의 시신 매장을 비롯하여 사후의 일을 수습하고, 후손을 통해 혁명의 대의를 계승한다. 물론 이 경우 역적의 유족으로서 사회적 낙인 및 경제적 궁핍 등으로 인해 극심한 곤란을 겪기도 한다. 요컨대 근대문학에서 동학군의 아내는 다양하게 형상화되어 있다. 다만 여전히 많은 동학문학에서 여성은 소외되어 있다. 향후 동학농민혁명과 여성의 관련성에 주목하여 관련 작품을 발굴하고 그 의의를 탐색할 필요가 있다.
