The features of our modern society can be defined in various dimensions. However, most of people point out more the negative aspect than the positive aspect among those definitions. The indication of these negative aspects can be traced back to the problem of the development of occidental modenity. And it can be gone back to the notions of liberty, equality, and fraternity which are the ideal level of occidental modenity. It is presupposed that these conceptions still stand even now. Nevertheless, the concept of fraternity is under-appreciated compared to the concepts of liberty and equality both in western civil society and social states. Thus, this essay starts from this issue and in this essay I will try to revaluate the concept of fraternity. This trial will be done through the comparative work between the concept of fraternity and the corresponding concept in Donghak · Chondogyo inquiring the history of the concept of fraternity Especially this comparative work will be based very much upon the concept of Sa In Yeo Chen(事人如天) and the other concepts in Donghak · Chondogyo. And furthermore grounded on that result, this essay will be presented the reconstructed concept of fraternity as the solution reducing the problem of occidental modernity which is centering at critical modern society to the problems of liberty and equality.

현대사회의 특징을 여러 가지 눈높이로 규정할 수 있다. 그런데 많은 사람들은 그러한 규정 중에서 긍정적인 관점보다는 부정적인 측면을 더 많이 지적한다. 이러한 부정적 측면의 지적은 궁극적으로 서구 모더니티(modernity) 전개의 문제로 거슬러 올라 갈 수 있다. 그리고 그것은 서구 모더니티(modernity)의 이념적 차원인 자유와 평등 그리고 박애의 세 가지 개념으로 소급시켜 살펴 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 근대 이래 아직 그 개념들은 ‘유효한 이념이다’라는 사실을 전제한다. 그러나 그 중에서 박애의 개념은 서구 시민사회와 사회주의 국가 모두 안에서 자유와 평등의 이념처럼 평가되지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제의식으로부터 먼저 현대사회의 이념의 축을 이루는 자유와 평등 개념에 비해 소외된 박애 개념에 대한 새로운 조명을 시도하려고 한다. 그러한 시도는 박애 개념에 대한 개념사적 고찰을 시도하면서 동학 · 천도교 안에서 박애 개념에 상응하는 개념과의 비교 작업으로 이루어진다. 특히 동학 · 천도교 안에서 사인여천(事人如天) 개념과 그 부수적 개념들은 박애 개념과의 비교 작업 안에서 중요한 준거로 사용된다. 더불어 본 연구는 그러한 결과를 바탕으로 현대사회 위기의 중심부에 서있는 서구 모더니티의 문제를 자유와 평등 문제로 환원시키면서 그 해법을 ‘재구성된 박애의 개념’으로 제시하려고 한다.
