This study discusses the features of the religious experience of Suun and Augustine. Religious experience of the two thinkers is a discussion of the true cognition. That is the process of cognizing the Absolute that is inherent in him through self-reflection. Suun’s religious experience is the experience of mystery that human is completely united with the Absolute. The religious experience is available through a process of self-reflection. This is not different from each other, the Absolute and me, to realize that the same fundamental existence. Suun expresses this realization that is called ‘my mind is your mind soon’(Oh-sim-jeok-yeo-sim). Augustine is also seeking religious experience of God that is present in him. This is a discussion on God experience as a self-reflection. However, this is not a discussion of the ontological identity. Man himself will realize that God’s Form(imago dei). Therefore, the Augustinian religious experience does not claim that fundamental equality with God. In addition, this study ranged that the religious experience in Suun and Augustine is not simply a mystical experience. This means that the religious experience of the two thinkers is not passiv but active and voluntary.

이 연구는 수운의 종교체험과 아우구스티누스의 종교체험이 갖는 특징에 대하여 논의한다. 두 사상가의 종교체험은 곧 참된 인식에 대한 논의이다. 즉 자기성찰을 통해 자기 자신에 내재하는 절대자를 인식하는 과정에 대한 논의이다. 수운의 종교체험은 인간이 절대자와 완전히 합일되는 신비의 체험이다. 이러한 종교체험은 자기성찰의 과정을 통해 가능하다. 이는 나와 절대자가 서로 다르지 않고, 근원적으로 동일 존재임을 깨닫는 것이다. 수운은 이러한 신비의 깨달음을 ‘내 마음이 곧 네 마음’이라는 오심즉여심(吾心卽汝心)으로 표현한다. 아우구스티누스의 종교체험도 수운과 마찬가지로 자신의 내면에 존재하는 절대자, 즉 신을 찾는 것이다. 이는 자기성찰로서의 신(神)체험에 대한 논의이다. 하지만 인간과 신과의 완전한 합일, 즉 존재론적 동일성에 대한 논의는 아니다. 인간이 신의 모상(imago dei)으로서 신에 가장 유사한 존재임을 스스로 깨닫는 것이다. 따라서 아우구스티누스의 종교체험에서는 신과의 근원적인 동일성이 주장되지 않는다. 이 외에도 이 연구에서는 수운의 종교체험과 아우구스티누스의 종교체험이 단순히 신비적인 체험이 아님을 논의한다. 이는 두 사상가의 종교체험이 수동적이 아니라 능동적이며 자발적임을 의미한다.
