In 1894, when the Donghak Peasant Revolution broke out, Hongki Kim theleader served as a central figure of the Revolution among the native Namwoninhabitants. Hongki Kim the leader organized the Donghak Army with theKim families of Soonchun in its center, gradually extending its influence overNamwon and neighboring areas. A number of the Kim families of Soonchunwho followed Hongki Kim actively joined the Donghak Peasant Revolution. However, Hongki Kim was arrested and executed just after the Revolution. It was Taehong You who inherited the ideas of the Revolution from him. Taehong You was only twenty-six years old when he presented a petition tothe Local Government Office in Jeolla as a representative of Jeolla-jwado. It isimportant to note that the families of Hongki Kim and Taehong You continuedto interact with each other during the Japanese colonial era. My argument is thatthe Donghak Peasant Revolution of the native Namwon inhabitants centeredaround Hongki Kim and Taehong You. While Hongki Kim functioned as a keyfigure during the Revolution, Taehong You inherited the ideas of the Revolutionafter it came to a close.

1894년 동학농민혁명 당시 남원지역의 토착 동학농민군의 핵심은 김홍기대접주였다. 김홍기 대접주는 순천김씨를 기반으로 동학의 조직을 마련하고점차 주변지역까지 그 영향력을 확장해 나갔다. 김홍기를 따르는 많은 순천김씨 일족들은 동학농민혁명에 적극적으로 참여하고 있다. 그러나 아쉽게도김홍기는 동학농민혁명 직후 체포되어 처형되었다. 그런데 이러한 김홍기의정신은 유태홍에게로 이어졌다. 유태홍은 비교적 젊은 나이인 26세에 전라좌도를 대표하여 전라감영에 소장을 제출할 때 등장하고 있다. 김홍기 일가와유태홍 일가는 일제강점기에도 계속해서 교류하고 있다. 남원지역 토착 동학농민군은 바로 이 김홍기와 유태홍을 중심으로 활동이 전개되었다고 할 수있다. 동학농민혁명 과정에서는 김홍기가 큰 역할을 하였고 동학농민혁명이끝난 뒤에는 유태홍이 그러한 전통을 이어갔다.
