An old-printed novel "General Nokdoo" written by Rho Ik-hwan fictionalizedJeon Bong-joon's life, which was published in the 1930s by Shingoo Seorim. Although this novel is understood as the first work that was published aboutJeon Bong-joon, it has not yet been known to the academic circles. The purposeof this study was to examine the bibliographies and descriptive characteristics ofthis novel, as it's introduced in this study for the first time. The expression "anold-printed novel" was added in front of the title of it in order to discriminatebetween it and other works of the same title that were introduced earlier than it. The significances of this novel were explained in this study in terms of two:First, this work was basically for a commercial purpose. Since it waspublished for people in general by a professional publisher, what's interestingabout Jeon Bong-joon's life was described instead of stressing historical orreligious facts. And how Donghak was perceived at that time could be foundin the novel, and how orally transmitted tales and folksongs related to it wereperceived could be found as well. Second, this work was published relativelyearlier among materials related to Donghak. Therefore it's possible to compare itwith existing well-known materials to check how records and awareness of JeonBong-joon and Donghak were passed down. Accordingly, this work seems tobe a significant material that makes it possible to have a broader understandingof Donghak and Jeon Bong-joon, though it hasn't yet been covered in existingstudies.

전봉준의 일대기를 소설적으로 형상화한 구활자본 <녹두장군>은 1930년신구서림에서 출판된 작품으로 저작자는 노익환이다. 전봉준과 관련하여 이른 시기에 상업적으로 출판된 작품으로 파악되지만 아직까지 학계에 알려지지 않았었다. 이에 본 논문에서는 이 작품을 처음 소개한다는 측면에서 서지적 사항 및 서술적 특징에 대하여 논의하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 여기서 작품의 제명 앞에 서지적 용어인 구활자본이라 표현한 것은 <녹두장군>이라는 제명의 다른 작품들이 먼저 소개되었기에 이를 변별하기 위하여 덧붙인 것이다. 그리고 본 논문에서는 이 작품에서 다음의 두 가지 의미를 강조하였다. 첫 번째는 이 작품이 상업적 성격을 토대로 하고 있다는 점이다. 전문 출판업자에 의하여 대중적 독서를 위해 출판되었기에, 역사적이나 종교적 성격이강조되기 보다는 전봉준의 일대기에서 흥미로운 부분들을 다양하게 서술하고 있다. 이러한 과정에서 당시 전파되었던 동학과 관련된 설화 및 민요, 그리고 동학에 대한 인식들이 드러난다. 두 번째는 작품의 출판시기가 동학 관련 자료들 가운데서도 비교적 이른 시기라는 점이다. 이로써 기존에 알려진 자료들과 비교하여 이 시기 전봉준과 동학에 대한 기록과 인식이 어떻게 전승되고 있었는지에 대하여 확인해 볼 수 있다. 따라서 이 작품은 아직까지 기존 연구에서 다루어지지 않은 자료이긴 하지만, 동학과 전봉준에 대한 이해의 폭을넓힐 수 있는 자료로서 의미가 있다고 판단된다.
