I attempted to study the historical consciousness in teller and audience ofDonghak revolution through the aspects of exerting an evil in Donghak Riots asoral folk tales in this essay. Donghak Riots is the type of tales that narrate the outbreak, development,and end of Donghak revolution and see the cause of failure as the exerting anevil Donhak peasant army to non-combatant. In this respect, it can be said thatDonghak Riots tales reflect the negative awareness about Donghak revolution. I believe that the negative awareness results in the distortion of Donghakrevolution. And the main medium is the mainstream discourse of aboutDonghak revolution that was espoused and spread by ruling power. Lastly, itcan be said that Donghak Riots continue to exist, because the awareness hasbeen handed down among people through education.

본 논문은 동학란이야기에 나타나는 작폐 양상을 통해 동학혁명에 대한 향유층의 역사의식 문제를 논구한 것이다. 논의 대상은 현전하는 동학란이야기9편이다. 동학란이야기는 동학혁명의 발발 및 전개, 종결을 중심 소재 혹은 배경으로삼은 이야기인데 서사의 초점에 따라 ‘학정으로 인한 발발’과 ‘작폐로 인한 종결’ 등 두 가지 서사로 나뉜다. 이 중 후자는 민간에 대한 동학군의 작폐를 강조함으로써 동학혁명에 대한 부정적 인식을 드러낸다는 점에서 특징적이다. 그런데 이러한 작폐 양상은 두 가지 서사에, 그리고 다양한 텍스트 층위에 걸쳐 나타난다. 이런 점에서 동학란이야기는 동학혁명에 대한 부정적 태도를반영한 것이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 동학혁명에 대한 부정적 시각은 혁명 당시부터 최근까지 진행된 동학혁명의 실상에 대한 은폐 및 왜곡에 기인하는 것으로 보인다. 그리고 그 주요 매개체는 지배 권력에 의해 조장되고 유포되어온 동학혁명에 대한 주류 담론이다. 이러한 것이 공사 간의 교육에 의해 전승됨으로써 현전하는 동학란이야기가 존재하게 되었다고 할 수 있다.
