The goal ot this study is to discover the systematization of the power of the people in Song Gi-suk's 『General Nokdu』. This study focuses on the identity of the people, the mutual relation of the people and how to systematize their power. This study starts with the different sight from the existing discussions that focus on the people in Song Gi-suk's 『General Nokdu』. The narration of Song Gi-suk's 『General Nokdu』 places the people on the center, but it informs the man who systematizes the power of the people. The man is the leader of Donghak Peasantry Military, above all Jeon, Bong-jun who understands the power of the people. The systematization of the power of the people in Song Gi-suk's 『General Nokdu』 is disscussed in the Samlae mass meeting, the secret in Maitreya, the funeral of Donghak Peasantry Military and the signal fire of the Baisan. The Samlae mass meeting for the Leader of Identity acts as to bring Jeon, Bong-jun to the wise leader. Donghak Peasantry Military mass meeting acts as to systematize their power. The secret in Maitreya acts to rise the status of Donghak Peasantry Military. And the funeral of Donghak Peasantry Military acts to form a whole them. Finally, the signal fire of the Baisan acts to give the hope to Donghak Peasantry Military, in the other words the people. The hope for the people is the wise leader, Jeon, Bong-jun. In Song Gi-suk's 『General Nokdu』, the people are in the center of the narration. Nevertheless, the great man who systematize the power of the people is Jeon, Bong-jun.

본 글의 목적은 송기숙의 『녹두장군』에 등장하는 민중들의 잠재된 역량이 어떤 과정을 통해 조직화 되어 가는지를 살피는데 있다. 그 고찰 과정에서는 먼저 민중의 정체와 그들 상호 관계를 파악하였다. 이를 바탕으로 서사 속 사건과 놀이, 전쟁 상황 등에서 발생되는 민중 역량 조직화 양상에 주목하였다. 본 논의는 송기숙의 『녹두장군』에서는 작품 제목과 달리 녹두장군 전봉준에 주목하기보다 전쟁의 주체 민중에 주목해야 된다고 하는 기존 논의들과는 다른 시각을 가지고 출발하고 있다. 󰡔녹두장군󰡕의 서사는 전쟁 주체로 민중을 서사의 중심에 위치시키고 있지만, 뜬구름 같은 민중들을 조직화하여 그들의 잠재된 역량을 발휘하게 하는 인물의 존재 역시 분명히 드러내고 있다. 포괄적으로 그 인물은 동학의 두령들이고, 그 중에서도 전봉준은 민중의 잠재된 역량을 잘 파악하고 조직화된 분출로 이끌어 가는 인물로 형상화되고 있다. 『녹두장군』의 서사에서 보이는 민중 역량의 조직화는 교조신원을 위한 삼례대회, 두령회의 등의 이성적 역량 조직화와 미륵 비결 사건, 농민군 장례식, 농민군 백산 진영의 봉화 등의 감성적 역량 조직화를 통해 드러나고 있다. 결국 송기숙의 『녹두장군』은 서사를 이끌어 가는 중심축에 민중을 위치시키고 있지만, 민중들의 소같은 우직한 마음을 잘 파악하고 사건이나 전쟁 상황을 통해 이성적으로 또한 감성적으로 그들의 역량을 조직화 해나간 주체는 전봉준임을 드러내는 작품이라 할 수 있다.
