This study considers the influence and transformation of the traditional idea of 'heaven(天)' in the acceptance of evolutionary theory in modern East Asia. In particular, as comparing the aspects of Yanfu and Kato Hiroyuki’s understanding and acceptance of evolution theory, who had most actively introduced evolution theory in China and Japan, we can recognize that they understood and accepted the theory from the strong influence of the traditional notion of ‘heaven(天)’. In the case of Yan-Fu, in the principle of 'Tienyan(天演)' based on the invisibility it went towards comprehension while coexisting 'nature' and 'acting' together. On the other hand, the idea of 'A Natural Human right' departing from the invisibility became self-contradictory, Kato resolved the transcendence of 'heaven (天)' and developed through a nature's law, 'Tensoku(天則)' claim. Until now, research on the acceptance of Western European ideas including evolutionary theory in East Asia has been performed with reference to Western European ideas.

본고는 근대 동아시아의 진화론 수용상에 나타나는 ‘천’이라는 전통적 관념의 작동 및 변용의 양상을 고찰한 것이다. 특히 중국과 일본에서 진 화론을 가장 적극적으로 도입하였던 옌푸와 가토 히로유키의 진화론이 해 및 수용의 양상을 비교함으로써 이들 모두 전통적인 ‘천’관념의 강력 한 영향으로부터 진화론을 이해하고 받아들이고 있었음을 확인할 수 있 었다. 이들은 모두 ‘천’관념의 ‘불가지성’이라는 측면으로부터 서구사상 을 수용하는 단서로 삼고 있었으나, 옌푸의 경우는 그 불가지성을 기반 으로 ‘천연’이라는 원리 안에서 ‘임천’과 ‘승천’을 함께 공존시키며 종합 하는 방향으로 나아갔고, 가토의 경우는 그 불가지성으로부터 출발한 ‘천부’의 관념이 자기모순에 빠지자 ‘천’의 초월성을 해소하고 철저한 자 연의 법칙, 즉 ‘천칙’으로 나아가는 방향으로 자기 이론을 전개하였다.
