I, in this article, want to define the philosophy of counseling as a philosophical reflection for finding the essence and character of counseling, and do it as a part of scientific philosophy for questioning its meaning of scientific justification. According to the definition of mine, several arguments follows. First of all, I clarify the difference of counseling from psychotherapy. To show that the concepts are different and not interactive each other, I interpret the psychotherapy in two ways. One is about the psychology of therapy of mind, the other about therapy of psychologic state of value, cognition, emotion and the like. The merit of my clarification is what psychotherapy becomes 'a way of mind' (beyond all psychological states, covering the holistic state of us) based on the psychological theory of the counseling process, and what counseling and psychotherapy is not the same. Most of misunderstanding that counseling should be explained only by psychology are due to one's prejudice that counseling is psychotherapy and that psychotherapy then depends on psychology. Thus philosophical counseling has its own meaning as a method of counseling with the psychological counseling as well. Philosophical counseling is against the philosophy of counseling that is understood three philosophical ways as follows. First, philosophy of counseling is for questioning the essence of counseling. It is in the concept of counseling that therapy of mind is included. The concept of therapy must be understood a healing as the proverb "time heals all sorrows" goes. Psychotherapy so becomes a way of 'mind therapy' and in this way all my understanding is to criticize the established method of philosophical counseling. Second, philosophy of counseling is for values of counselor. The significant meaning of counseling for the counselor is to help the clients find a happy life through counseling. To do it, the counseling aims at changing the way of life of clients and positioning the value correctness of them. This time the intended counseling is effective and is setting as a thesis of ethical counseling. Third, philosophy of counseling is about the justification of counseling in which the objective and scientific research is able to be established. While counseling as a part of an academic science is to describe the theory and method of counseling, philosophy of counseling is to explain those theory and method. Here the explanation must be considered as an understanding of rational explanation, but not just a way of causal explanation.

나는 상담철학을 첫째, 상담의 본질, 상담의 성격 등에 관한 철학적 반 성, 둘째, 상담학의 과학적 정당성을 묻는 과학철학의 한 분야라고 정의 하였다. 상담철학을 그와 같이 정의하면서 상담철학에서는 어떠한 문제들 이 논의되어야 하는지를 살펴보았다. 먼저 나는 상담과 심리치료의 의미를 명확히 구분하였다. 상담과 심리치료라는 두 용어는 호 환적이 아님을 보이기 위해 나는 심리치료를 두 가 지로 해석하였다 하나는 . 마음에 관한 치료를 위한 심리학적 접근, 다른 하나는 가치관, 인지, 정서 등의 마음상태(심리상태)의 치료라는 의미이 다. 이렇게 구분하면 심리치료는 상담의 과정에서 심리학적 이론을 토대로 마음을 치료하기 위해 사용하는 하나의 방법일 뿐, 상담과 심리치료를 동 일한 것으로 파악하지 않게 된다. 상담학을 심리학의 아류로서 바라보는 잘못된 시선은 상담은 곧 심리치료이며, 심리치료의 기반은 심리학이라는 언어인식에서 오는 오해 탓이다. 이러한 구분에 의해 철학 상담은 마음을 치유하는 상담 방법의 하나로서 심리학적 상담과 어깨를 견주게 된다. 철학 상담은 상담 방법의 하나라고 보는데 반해, 상담철학은 다음과 같 은 세 가지 주제를 다루는 철학의 한 분야로 이해하였다. 첫째는 상담의 본질을 묻는 것이었다. 상담이라는 용어에는 마음에 관 한 치료개념이 함축되어 있다고 보았는데, 여기서의 치료는 “시간은 모 든 슬픔을 치유한다.”라는 말에서처럼 치유의 의미로 이해해야 한다고 보았다. 그래서 심리치료는 마음에 관한 치료의 한 수단이며, 이러한 의 미에 기초하여 철학 상담의 접근 방법을 비판적으로 검토하였다. 둘째는 상담자의 가치관을 다루는 것이었다. 상담의 주된 목표는 내담 자가 상담의 경험을 계기로 행복한 삶을 개척해 나갈 수 있도록 내담자를 변화시켜 주는 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 내담자의 사고방식을 변화시킬 수 있는 상담이어야 하고, 상담자의 가치관 정립을 전제해서만 그러한 상 담이 효과적임을 강조하였다. 그리고 이는 상담윤리학의 큰 과제였다. 셋째는 상담에 대한 객관적이고 과학적인 연구가 가능한가라는 상담학의 정당성 문제를 다루 는 것이었다. 상담학은 상담에 관한 이론과 방법 등을 기술하지만, 상담철학은 상담현상을 설명하는데, 여기서의 설명은 인과적 설명이 아니라, 합리적 설명이라는 이해의 방법이 사용되어야 한 다고 보았다.
