In this research, middle-class families in the 1990's of Japan and its implications was seen through the Japanese movie titled『Shall We Dance』 (1996). I reviewed the impotent feeling that the usual Japanese patriarch in their forties can experience through "Sugiyama" who is the main character of the movie. After the war, most patriarch in Japan devoted themselves for their families and the economical development of country. However, eventually they became facing crisis because of the lack of communication with family members and monotonous lives. In this paper, I considered the role of the family by analyzing the main character, "Sugiyama", his wife and a child. I could find that typical relationship among family members, those are the wife who were relation-oriented rather than self-initiative and the child who played a role of mediator between her parents. The director intended to build his own artistic field and tried to show the recovery of relationship among the family members through which is not familiar with the public. Namely, the independency and unity of the family members were pursued by introducing extraordinary experiences in the daily life.

본 연구에서는 일본영화 『쉘 위 댄스』(1996)의 작품분석을 통해, 1990년대 일본 중산층 가족의 모습과 그 의미에 대해 고찰하였다. 먼저 본문에서는, 작품의 주인공인 40대 초반의 가장 스기야마를 통해 일본의 중년 가장들이 경험하는 무력감에 대해 살펴보았다. 전후로부터 지금까지 일본의 가장들은, 국가경제발전과 가족부양이라는 책임아래 눈앞의 목표만을 향해 달려왔다. 그러나 결국 이러한 상황으로 인해 일본의 가장들은 일상생활에서의 즐거움을 찾지 못 하고, 나아가 가족구성원들과의 소통부재라는 위기를 맞이하게 되었다. 또한 이러한 중년가장의 모습을 비롯해 그 외의 가족 구성원인 아내와 자녀의 캐릭터를 각각 분석함으로써, 일본가족의 역할관계에 대해 고찰하였다. 고찰 결과, 자기 주도적이라기보다는 관계 지향적인 아내와 부부사이에서 중개자 역할을 하는 자녀의 모습을 통해 전형적인 가족구성원의 관계에 대해 살펴볼 수 있었다. 감독은 일반인들에게는 거리감이 있는 〈사교댄스〉라는 소재를 통해, 자신만의 독립된 영역 구축과 더불어 가족 간의 관계 회복을 지향하였다. 하지만 전형적인 일본가족의 형태를 지지함으로써, 가족관계에 있어서의 근본적인 문제나 현대가족의 다양성을 포괄적으로 인식하지 못했다는 점이 지적된다.
