Families are not biological or natural. The forms of families in western history also have changed continuously: From the ancient communitarian family based on matrifocality and group marriage, through the medieval nuclear family based on household under the manorial system, to the modern capitalistic family based on family wage. These forms of families are made by socio-economic conditions, political power relations, and resistance and adaptations of individual families. But we need the carefulness to insist the universality of characteristics of family, because it has included immense diversities.

가족은 통념적으로 생각하듯이 자연발생적이거나 생물학적인 것은 아니다. 그래서 서구의 가족 형태도 끊임없이 변천해왔다. 여성중심적이고 집단혼에 기초한 원시 공동체가족에서부터, 장원제의 토대 위에서 가구를 중심으로 구성된 중세 가족, 나아가 가장의 노동력과 수입(가족임금)에 의존한 근대 자본주의 가족에 이르는 다양한 발전이 이루어졌다. 이런 가족의 형태들은 사회경제적 조건, 정치적 세력관계 그리고 그에 대한 개개인의 저항과 적응 속에서 만들어 진 것이다. 그러나 이런 가족형태는 그 안에서 다양성을 내포한다는 점에서 가족이 지니는 특성의 보편성을 강조하는 것에 대해 신중한 접근이 필요하다.
